I assume you've seen the spec for the modem (component) of self-install? I've posted the link a few times.

I wonder how closely the two(?) integrated VDSL2 routers used by some here adhere.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet Extra Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 57.4/14.6Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Hmm, sorry, I don't recall that.

I was thinking more along the lines of bad house wiring giving people really poor VDSL sync; which currently an Openreach engineer can correct. I foresee lots of "banded" profiles in the future.

James BT Infinity 2 19/09/2012 - Estimate 44.6/6.5 - Install 52/12 - Actual 46 / 8 Mbps
13 years of broadband - ntl:(512k/1M)/BTbusiness(2M)/Metronet(2M)/Bulldog(8M/16M)/BE(16M)/BT FTTC(50M)

SIN 498, specifically sections 2.4 and 3.

I'm sure Openreach will be quite happy to impose banded profiles and leave it ti the CP/user to sort out wiring then pray for an auto-reset by the DLM. (IIRC a couple of these have been reported here).

I think poorly installed FTTC is quite common, when an engineer visited me recently he had just come from another customer where he had gained 20 Meg by correctly wiring it up.

Some good stuff in that SIN - it will be a shame if Openreach launch self-install as ISPs such as AAISP have already reported they have a slightly better diagnostics/working relationship due to the active NTE than they do with ADSL services and the user/CP provided NTE.

I would hope at such a launch the Openreach tools provided to the CP/ISP would be improved, so at least a user can call their ISP for a profile reset. Self reset sounds good - hopefully product improvement is ongoing within the Openreach system.

20 meg is a scarily high number - the original installing person must have been one of the new technicians rather than a proper Openreach engineer, without any diagnostic kit perhaps?
