DIfference between speed test results

[link to this post]
Hey guys,
Got Plusnet Unlimited Fibre installed on Friday and happy with speed so far - just have a quick question. Why is there such a difference between the speed tests on this site (shown in my sig) an BT's Speed Tester ( picture here: )? I also get around 56 down / 13 up on I get a maximum download speed of 5.5MB/s.

Dellnet, IC24 Dialup --> UKOnline, Lite LLU Dec 2006 - June 2010 --> O2 Standard, June 2010 - February 2013 --> Plusnet Unlimited Fibre, February 2013 - present

You may be getting bits and bytes confused (a common problem).

Speedtests usually quote in magabits per second (Mbps). 56Mbps is a typical FTTC speed.
Actual downloads are usually measured in megabytes (MBps). There are 8 bits to the byte, so 56Mbps is the same as 7MBps.

There are also often small overheads in the download; so a download speed in MBps of 1/10 the speedtest Mbps figure is quite common;
and probably what you are seeing.

Moved (with trepidation turned relief) to BT Infinity 2 for upload speed. Happy BE user for several years.
