New FTTC and pings keep going up

I had FTTC installed last monday through ZEN and to begin with my pings were around 15ms with no jitter. It then went up after a few days to the mid 20s with a little jitter. and a few days ago it rose again to around 36ms with a little more jitter as well.

I have connected my laptop directly to the openreach modem to check if its my router adding the ping but it returns the same results. I have also had some disconnections on the modem and each time it seems to do this it settles down and then the ping goes up.

Is this normal for fttc as most of the pings I have seen are a bit lower than mine and to be honest I am a bit disappointed. I had my adsl with zen as well and my ping was around 14ms lower with no jitter.

The openreach system raises level of interleaving when it sees errors. The extra latency is an effect of this error correction

Yeah same happened to me as the profile kicked in. Ping slowly increases and the speed may slowly lower, took about 3 weeks for mine to settle down.

Unfortnately its just the limitations of your line and the equipment in the cabinet doing its job.

Depends where you are pinging; I'm on a BT Infinity service, and I'm interleaved. My old BE connection could manage 10ms or less to the BBC, but I get 19ms on Infinity.

I have also just found out that every time my wife goes out she turns off the OR modem at the wall would this cause any problems?

Also whenever I unplug my router and plug my laptop straight into the OR modem my tbb graph turns completely red is this because the router does not respond to ping requests?

I can get a full 20 up would that not mean I can get a bit faster on the down speed? I thought that meant I was reasonably close to the cab.

Unless she only goes out about once a week, yes - tell her to stop, immediately!

So this can cause problems. Might this possibly be the reason why my ping is increasing?

She goes out a lot and if I'm not in she turns off everything in the house at the socket. What can I say she loves the environment.

Could be. Turning things like that off every time you go out is madness, the power consumption is miniscule.

The DSLAM at the green box watches every time you power off and its convinced there is a problem, so it will increase your ping and worse it will slow your speeds down. Your Openreach modem needs to be left on for 3 to 6 months to sort this out.

The modem is using tiny amounts of power. Turning the computer off - good, turning the router and or modem off = bad.

Which IMO is very unreasonable , it should only be a press of a switch on a control panel, but thanks to BT Openreach or who ever else within BT and their backwards thinking isn't possible for even ISP's as it requires a engineer to visit the cab and reset it (DLM)
Maybe if all those affected by this where to complain about it en mass , not here or other forums but to BT directly Then there maybe a small chance that they will listen to the customer for once and implement changes, well we can only hope

The other thing unless there are multiple resyncs of the modem within a short space of time DLM should not do anything adversly unless as above : Example: power modem off>on 30 times within a 2 hr window, but off and on once or twice within a 24hr period shouldn't cause DLM to ramp up interleaving and that nasty INP nonsense which give the lag factor , that coupled with lower sync & profiles
