The future - anybody fancy 10 Gbit/s broadband?

Reading PC Pro this morning I came across an article about Superfast Broadband Cornwall, and they featured a company that is trialing XG-PON, which is a 10Gbps fibre connection.

Of course these sorts of speeds are totally useless for normal internet usage at the moment, but very impressive none the less.

And if I understood correctly they are running two connections over the same fibre concurrently, the normal 330Mbs connection, and the 10Gbps connection at the same time.

10 gigabit cards for servers are already a reality.

The latest Intel ones are about £400 and are on the PCI-e form factor and are compatable with win7 as well as windows server.

So running your own server farm at home is becoming a reality it seems.

It is a demo that travels the world.

But yes it shows the ability for a fibre to carry lots of different signals, and provide near limitless bandwidth

I'd be happy with 10Mb at the moment, let alone 1000x that speed.

We've had a 10Gb connection at work for 2-3 years now. It's a Bandwidth-on-demand link though. We have to book the bandwidth we need. We've had 4x 1Gb connections for several years now also (I can't remember when they were put in, but think it was around 2003/2004).

Now all I need is around 14 miles of fibre

A distant dream here in Canada.

Bell Canada do 175Mbit symmetrical FTTH in increasing coverage but the price is a bit prohibitive. Works out about 110 quid a month and it has a usage allowance lol.
