Draytek 2850N on ECI Cab

Has anyone used a Draytek Vigor 2850N as a modem while connected to an ECI cab? If so, how was the performance compared to the ECI modem?

Yes - my cabinet is ECI based and I did for a short time use a 2850N.

There were a couple of negative aspects. First, the Upload speed was down on the OR modem. I am close to the cab and have around 74/18mbps. The upload with the 2850N was no more than about 12 or so. I understand from Draytek support that this is a known problem for some, but not all users (different DSLAMs??). After I disposed of mine I was sent a beta firmware to test for any improvement but it was too late! The download speed was slightly down on both the ECI, and a HG612 unlocked modem.

The other thing I remember were the frequent and very regular latency spikes which showed up on the tbb graph. They didn't appear to be NTP attempts and I found it rather annoying not being able to identify the cause!

However it may well be that others have had a much more positive experience!

Hmm. Okay, thanks for that. I'm off next week so I'll plug it in and see how it goes. I'm currently getting about 62/18.

If you are getting the full 18 upload you are clearly not suffering my problem re speed.

My email from Draytek Support a few weeks ago said:

"Thanks for your email. This issue has been reported for the 2850, however it is not a widespread issue and may only affect certain 2850's.

I have attached a Beta firmware to this email. Please flash this firmware and then re test. This may improve the speeds.

If it does not then please try setting the following setting

WAN > General Setup > WAN1 - DSL Mode = VDSL Only
VLAN Tag Insertion VDSL = Enable
tag Value = 101
Priority = 0"

No, that 18 upload is with the OpenReach ECI modem. I'm only using the 2850 as a router for the moment. I'll get onto support if it doesn't sync with the equivalent as the ECI.

Yes I do still have the beta firmware although it may be that there is already a better beta available direct from Draytek Support? Might be best to contact them first - they have always responded to me quickly and efficiently.

The version I have is "2850001.all" rec'd on 28.3.2013,....

Well, just tried it as I had time, but no go.

It seemed to sync with the cab okay, but the PPPoE session wouldn't negotiate. VDSL status showed a 7999x/20000 sync but as the PPPoE failed there was no way of testing. I'll ping Draytek support.

Tried it again and now it's connected.

It's reporting: Upload Download
Actual Data Rate 20000 79984 Kb/s
Attainable Rate 26527 89037 Kbps

And the online status shows as:

The http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ is reporting 71.6/8.87 which is inline with what it was reporting after my first abortive attempt and I'd put the ECI modem back in place. Pre my fiddling, the BT checker was reporting 72.15/15.34

I think I'll leave it as is for a few days and see what it looks like.

The Draytek has dropped the connection twice, requiring a reboot to reconnect (first time), so I've reconnected the ECI modem.
