Business FTTPoD Available - Residential Next?

[link to this post]

I saw the post below which shows FTTPoD being available for businesses across 35 exchanges and it seems to be available to order already. Interestingly, the screenshot on the blog shows FTTP being available on an exchange which doesn't have FTTC (in Cornwall so could be BDUK related?).

http://blog.networkunion.co/blog/bid/297497/BT-FTTP-...

Is there's anything we can read into this about FTTPoD access for residential customers? It doesnt look like the product is any different from the retail FTTPoD product they're planning. Does anyone have information on how the installation cost is charged for this business version of FTTPoD? Is the list of 35 exchanges the same as the residential trial?

Thanks

I think the info in the screenshot only refers to the cabinet (Cab 63), not the exchange itself (TRURO).

In other words FTTC is not planned for Cab 63 but is/will be available on other cabinets connected to the TRURO exchange.

I still thought it was odd given FTTPoD is only supposed to be available if you're on an FTTC enabled cabinet

The blog is referring to FTTP (as opposed to FTTP on Demand). It states that "As of June 2013, the BT FTTP rollout will be accross 35 exchanges". wink

I think around half (or possibly more) of those exchanges are in Cornwall, in fact my own exchange is amongst them and my particular cabinet area was added to the BT database last week as having FTTP available.

I'll soon be going ahead with getting FTTP installed, after all it would be rude not to after all the money that's been invested!

I thought that might be behind the Cornwall exchanges shown on the map. However on your other point, the second paragraph of the blog refers to FTTP on Demand and refers to a quotation which I assume means the installation costs. The final few paragraphs also refer to FTTP on Demand and the installation process

I agree that the blog also refers to FTTPoD, so perhaps I should have said something like "the part of the blog we are discussing is referring to FTTP" wink

What do you define as 'residential' FTTPoD?

The only one that anyone outside of Openreach knows anything about is the 330/30 product. I've not heard any rumour of anything else which is understandable given that the charges for FTTPoD don't even come close to covering the initial build.

The 330/30 product available to residential customers. I realise the costs are high but for people who work from home and will stay in their houses for a long time, the cost may be worthwhile

I think you've looked at this blog post and gone 2+2=5. It's just talking about FTTP and FTTPoD in terms that we already know about. There doesn't appear to be anything new here.

330/30 is an Openreach product, ISPs can sell it to whomever they wish. If an ISP offers FTTPoD I'm sure they'd be happy to sell it to a residential user so long as they can pay for it.

It says that quotes are available for business customers which is more than I have seen any residential provider offer today? It also says the BT product will be officially launched on 10-June as "BT Infinity for Business Option 3" which sounds like a BT Retail product, not an Openreach product - I don't think BT Retail advertise a residential product yet (even in the early market deployment areas)?

There's Infinity Option 3 aka Infinity 160, which is FTTP but not FTTPoD as that's still in trial.

Perhaps I am reading too much into it - it just implied to me that the business product is more advanced (in terms of timing) and if quotes are available, it might give some real life examples of how the Openreach pricing bands are going to work.

Reads like they don't know what FTTPoD is.

They keep using the terms FTTP and FTTP on Demand interchangeably which isn't correct.

You are reading too much into it.

Bt retail is simply aiming at the business sme arena as it thinks they can afford the install and monthly on going costs and committvto a 36 month contract.

At the openreach level they dont care if business or residential

I agree with Ignitionnet - the blog page gets rather confused between FTTP and FTTPoD.

Most telling, though, is the map of availability. That map includes a lot of FTTP locations, and doesn't restrict itself to the places where FTTPoD is known to be being trialled (at the Openreach level, if not at any retail level yet).

The blog purports to NOT be a reseller, so is presumably re-iterating the products available from BT Business - but "BT Business Infinty Option 3" doesn't appear on BT's own site, so we have no details about what it entails.

However, I did find this price document for the BT Business products - dated 8th June 2013 - and that includes the "Option 3" product: Business Broadband Price List, June 2013. £200pm for a 12month contract, and £150pm for a 24-month contract (where option 2, 76/20, is £57 and £40 respectively)

Finally, I found a page on their help/support site describing how to get the best from a business option 3 line - by using a gigabit ethernet port.

That page describes the "Business Option 3" as "up to 330/30".
