Using Netgear 6300AC with fibre

Hi all,

I just moved and took advantage of the move to upgrade to Fibre. I talked to Sky since I have TV through them and since I've been happy with Be Broadband for ages (silly me thinking Sky would be as good). Anyway, I asked when I signed up if I could use my own router connected to the Openreach fibre modem and was told yes (again, silly me for believing the sales guy and not doing a bit of googling but I was in a hurry).

Long story short, I get the fibre installed, do a little googling to figure out how to connect my R6300AC (which I am pretty happy with) to the network and from what I discover it is very difficult if not impossible and Sky actively discourages/tries to prevent it.

So, now I'm [censored] off, but more importantly don't want to be limited to the stupid Sky Hub. Before I jump ship and head over to BT I wanted to see if anyone as connected a Netgear 6300 AC router to the BT Fibre Infinity (or better Infinity 2) network. From everything I read it looks like so long as the route supports PPPOE (which it does), it shouldn't be a problem but I'd like to be sure.

All comments/help appreciated.

Is that a version of the D6300? Should work if you connect OR Fibre Modem to "Gigabit Ethernet connects to Cable or Fibre Modem".

The R6300 is a router only whereas the D6300 is a modem/router combo.

OP, any PPPoE router such as the R6300 should work with BT fibre. Some examples of people using the R6300 on BT Infinity:

You won't be disppointed with the R6300, its one of the best routers out there

It is an R and just a router, but thanks all that's great news. I'll be ditching Sky before my 7 day cooling off period and jumping over to BT.

Duh! Missed that 1; saw other 3 sans "R".

It's possible...

You need to basically plug in the openreach modem, then the Sky hub
Go into the Sky Hub settings and turn it's wireless off (probably best).
Then connect your own router to the sky hub via an ethernet cable.
So you have openreach modem - sky hub - own router
Connect your own router to the sky hub via a standard ethernet port not a WAN port.

Then turn off DHCP on your own router.

OR you can do the following.

Connect modem - sky hub - own router (using the WAN port if you have one).
Set up DMZ for an IP address.
Set your own router to the address in DMZ
Turn off DHCP on the sky hub.
Turn off wireless on sky hub
The sky hub now acts like a modem and it's asif it wasn't there.

OR you can download and install DDWRT firmware (but your router must support it) and bypass the sky hub. This is quite complex.

First two setups work fine though.
