VDSL Router?

Good Afternoon Guys and Girls. New here to the forum.

I have had PlusNet Fibre for half a year now when I moved into a new property but I am finally getting around to kitting out my house with a new GB network office and server room and part of this I want to replace my router PlusNet provide as I am not keen on it.

While I am looking into it what would be really nice is to have one box instead of the BT VDSL Modem and the PlusNet Router so my question is - and yes I know its not officially supported but I would keep the old boxes nicely encase of problems - can I get myself a nice VDSL Router/Modem to replace both of the boxes I currently have?

Yes

You've spotted the potential contractual issues, but integrated VDSL modem/routers are in use by some end users.

Not that many all in one units on the market as yet

and the other is the Fritzbox 7390 (but make sure you get a UK spec model)

Ive got a draytek with a vdsl/adsl modem built in, i like it

Which draytek - will add it to my post-it

Also the Technicolor TG589vn v3.

We use 2 of the Draytek 2850s (Home & office) for several reasons

All in one device
ADSL & 3G backup for the VDSL
Lan to Lan VPN facility

Both work well � but can be painful to setup if you�re not too technical.

Since BT and PlusNet share the same bed, then maybe the HomeHub5 might be worthy of consideration.

Nope as the HomeHubs are usually locked to the provider in terms of the authentication username.

http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2860.html is even better it is pricy for home use but well worth the money

The HH5 is plug in and go; an FTTC service goes into the DSL socket. No access to the configuration pages are necessary. As PlusNet is owned by BT it is highly possible that it would work with that ISP. I accept that historically HH's could not be used by ANY ISP, although I recall some have said it was not impossible to 'unlock' them.

It won't. They use different credentials to authenticate.

There is also the Zyxel sbg3300-n series.

Is there anything without wireless?

I have a Home Hub 5 working with my Plusnet FTTC.

Who was the HH5 supplied by?

I bought it off Ebay.

Changes that memory cell to the HH5 appears to work at least on PlusNet as well as BT

There's always the unlocked Huawei HG612

Andrew. You can also buy them from the BT Shop £129 for the Hub £35 for the AC dongle. But I bet Ebay was cheaper.

They also sell the HomeHub3 that is locked to BT...so being in the shop was not a clear sign

I have been looking at VDSL routers on Ebuyer but most of them the wan port is a RJ45 I assume this is not what I am after?

Also if I do manage to get hold of one does one know what I need to put in the setup to get it to connect to the isp since I cannot access the BT fibre box so I have no idea of the setup?

You are correct, an RJ45 WAN port is not what you want if after an all in one.

The list of devices mentioned in this thread are the best bet.

In terms of setup - for the devices people are mentioning here there will be others with it and have shared the settings so you don't have to experiment too much.

ok thanks. Me and my business partner are considering the Draytek model as we would like to setup a site to site VPN between our places but we had several very bad experiences recently with the Draytek 2830N can anyone vouch for the 2860 is it good? Good VPN throughput?

I thought most VDSL modem/routers could double up as a standalone router so they have a configurable WAN port. My Billion 8200N can.

Thanks for the information I am currently awaiting pricing on the Draytek Vigor 2850 and 2860 to compare but we will be going with one of these.

Does anyone have the settings required to get it connected to BT Infinity through Plusnet?

VLAN 101 in PTM mode, with PPPoE and your PlusNet user name and password.

Make sure whatever you buy has vectoring capable firmware (or will shortly get a vectoring capable firmware upgrade), as there's a risk Openreach will disable ports that don't participate correctly in vectoring if they roll out vectoring on a cabinet.

Do you know if the two Drayteks have that?

Ok I have 1 x Draytek 2860 and 1 x Draytek 2860N on order should arrive in a couple of days. Will post results.

UPDATE!

Ok i have the Draytek 2860 all plugged in to my PlusNet Fibre server as the only router (replacing both the BT Openreach modem and the PlusNet router)

First all ITS WORKING. I am all connected with internet access and working well HOWEVER I am much slower then before. Its synced at 40Mbps not the 70Mbps one im on.... I am assuming just a incorrect setting not that the router does not support it.... please please tell me thats the case?

Does the sync speed go back to normal if you use the Openreach modem?

What is the upstream sync?

Running latest firmware (3.7.3.3). I haven't tried changing back to the BT one yet trying to minimise disconnections as my wife is busy on net atm but when I get a change I will let you know.

huh it would seem I am just plugged the BT modem and Plusnet router back in and while I can not see the connection speed withint the router gui the portal reports same speed and speed test is actually a couple of mb less. Hmm thinks I will have to contact router as I deffinatly had more than that when I first signed up.

I am on their unlimited fibre package which is up to 76Mbps just checked. I will open a ticket up now and ask.

Yep seems like a mess up at provider just got off the phone to them and for some reason the put me on infinity 1 instead of 2 and they are now correcting that should see it go up within 24 or 48 hours.

I must of failed to check sync speed when I signed up orginally and it must be my estimate speed that I was thinking of not sync speed.

Just changed back to Draytek and its running smoothly infact my internet does feel a tiny bit more responsive now with the draytek speed check only varies by a MB or 2.
