Sync Ok - Download Sucks

[link to this post]

Hey all,

Had my infinity installed for 10 days now,but only just got around to using it. Sync speeds on the HH5 are 79/20 - I only live 100yds from the cabinet!

However, i have yet to see a speedtest or download (at varying times during the day) exceed 35mb.

Tried all sorts to eliminate problems my end - differnt router (Netgear N600), cables laptops etc.

I was expecting with a sync of 79mbit downloads would be in the high 60's at off peak times.

Any suggestions please?

First question ... wired or wireless?

The get Task Manager running so you can see how it is downloading.

Run speedtests from here and elsewhere and look at the task manager output. Does it ever get above 38Mbps? Is it up and down continually? The graph can tell you a lot about what is happening. Or grab a screen shot, put it on photobucket or flikr and provided a link.

I am on wired. Tried both on my internal network and direct connection to the router.

Most testing is on a mac, but results are the same when using a PC.

I'll checkout task manager on the PC and see what happens and post up some screen shots

Synced at 49 here and getting about 8 max.

I suspect Christmas related congestion, either at the exchanges and/or the ISPs, everyone's busy streaming movies.

Have you run the BT Wholesale Performance Test and then gone through to the Further Diagnostics at the bottom of the results page? Check the IP profile.

Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 59.4/14.4Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

More likely you have a wireless problem. I'm sync'ed at 59.4Mbps and getting this right now.

What exchange are you on? Congestion on an FTTC exchange I would regard as remarkable.

It's not a wireless problem, I tested with a wired connection.

I'm on LCULV here which I seem to recall has a 'parent' exchange as well. Last time it was a bit wobbly I was told there was an amber capacity warning on the parent one

Looks like I haven't ported the old Openreach spreadsheets to this computer, so at the moment I can't look up the FTTC headend for that, to check.

Your exchange itself is Red on 20CN, but that's irrelevant.

You'd have to have a fairly recent spreadsheet anyway as it was only activated in October.

Wouldn't surprise me too much, it's a town that often gets stuck in the 19th century so I was kind of surprised we got it to begin with smile

No, it could very well have been on the old one as not scheduled smile. It would still show the headend if so.

Hm. It's "up" to 10mbit now, I'd have thought by this time of night any congestion issues would be gone.

I left a download going actually and it failed with a network error so something is very borked somewhere

Improved marginally
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html...

I've eliminated the router and the cable connecting the modem and the router as problems.

Threading the download offers a significant improvement (still only about 20-25mbit worth of speed, but much much better than the 2mbit it gets on a single thread) which I seem to recall reading somewhere as an indicator for congestion as well.

When there was congestion on my local exchange the approximate peak slow down hours were 6pm-11:30pm Mon-Thu, 6:00pm-2:00am Fri, 4:00pm-2:00am Sat and 3:00pm-1:00am Sun.

Had to suffer it for 3 months before it was sorted.

Ok Chaps,

Just ran a test on the BT Wholesale checker and got the following results:

Results Image not loaded

1. Best Effort Test:

Download Speed : 65.95 Mbps

2. Upstream Test:

Upload Speed : 15.41

That seems pretty fair to me. However, if i go to any of the website download speed tests, it seems to average out at the following:

35.5mbps Download

14.5mbps Upload

Quite a significant difference in what BT is telling me and what i am actually getting

Well it's after 6pm and ta-da, it sucks again. In fact the TBB test actually gave up first time!

TBB Avg x1 3.19, Avg HTTPx6 19.31. Line is capable of 47-50...

Reported as a fault, will see what happens

Looks like it's going to be similar here.

At the moment there's pretty much no point to having FttC (but I guess the upload speed is nice?), and there are times when it's slower than the ADSL we had before. Whenever I come to use it, i.e. am at home, which means after work when everyone else is at home - it slows to ~7mbps on speed tests, but sometimes the real world downloads actually go down to what I seem to recall is about ADSL1 speed (if not dial-up speed), downloads of 40KB/s. Absolutely pathetic.

plusnet can't help much of course, we've gone to the far end of a fart on diagnostics but it all boils down to "looks ok to us! laugh" because they work 9-5 when the speed is ok. All they can do is send a BT engineer out to check the wiring etc (no point, it's fine, the wiring doesn't know what time it is and mysteriously go bad at peak time - plus the BT engineer would also be 9-5 and would just say "huh? looks fine to me!") and add us to a list of complaints so that hopefully one day they might upgrade the dslam. Yay.

I have been onto BT about mine. They keep calling me back saying everything thing is fine.

I explain that the sync speed both up and down are very good, but download speeds are shocking.

Where my problem is, is the download speeds NEVER exceed 3.5mbps. I have spoken with friends who have done tests on various servers and download sites and they are getting between 5 & 7mbps downloads, so i know its not the servers holding back.

The tech support dont seem to understand the difference between sync speeds and downloads. I got so fed up with trying to explain, i have now said to stop calling me (it was like 3 times a day) and i'll live with it.

It really sucks, getting 4mbps currently. If it wasn't for the upload advantage, I'd be asking to switch back to ADSL. Might as well rename it to superslow broadband!

Worth persevering with your ISP, after some pestering on the forums ours has a fault number now.
http://community.plus.net/exchange-information/

So hopefully we'll get somewhere soon.

No promises, but I don't think I'll be complaining about interleaving any more. After dropping to ADSL1 speeds on the evenings and struggling to even stream video let alone do Steam downloads etc, it really puts the previous drop from 62 to 50 mbps into perspective. It's almost as if someone went into the exchange and turned a few things off to make a point.

Just registered with the site to confirm the problens with the Ulverston exchange are still ongoing.

I've been trying to sort out my slow speeds in the evening since mid December.

I've pointed my ISP (Zen) to the PlusNet fault report, hopefully this will get sorted quickly...

See also http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,1220... for updates
Going by the other link though, the average repair time at the moment is about 2-3 weeks. As plusnet only reported the problem to their supplier (BT Wholesale I presume) on the 7th of this month, I think we'll probably have to hang in there for another couple of weeks yet, however much plusnet kindly pester them for us.

Now that it's a confirmed exchange problem there's not much either of our ISPs can do except keep pestering BTW for updates.

I'm kind of worried about this now!

As a few people have said that they are syncing ok, but the d/l speeds are abysmal.

Have been waiting for this for ages, but now not so sure!

Zen have spoken to BT and their estimate for clearing the fault is 10th February...

... and confirmed "BT still classifies fibre like DSL connections and don't give guarantees. BT won't compensate for this issue".

BT are claiming they have resolved this fault at the weekend - I'm still seeing really bad speeds in the evening.

Could anyone in the Furness area confirm if they are still having the problem, Thanks

Are you on the correct one?

Oops! This wouldn't apply to you. sorry.

But if you've had Fibre before the 1 February 2013 then you'll have to cancel and sign back up to take advantage of those changes on the 1 February 2013 (so it's reported anyway).
