Random question. If an ADSL modem is plugged into an FTTC/VDSL enabled line, will the street side DSLAM negotiate an ADSL connection? Or will it refuse to negotiate anything other than a VDSL connection?

BUT at least on one modem, the TG582n, has one ethernet socket as for VDSL input. !

The Ethernet socket is not for VDSL2 input, but for Ethernet using PPPoE from an Openreach VDSL2 modem

the BT home hub 5 will work with either adsl or vdsl
which I guess would make a 'self install' upgrade easy, since you could plug the modem in when you get it, and it work on adsl, then when the cabinet is upgraded, it will reconnect as vdsl.

As does the Brightbox 2 and I think the latest Sky Hub

But a TG582n won't, nor will a pure ADSL modem. Both as per the subject, and the 582n specifically as per the JGO post that Andrew answered .

then when the cabinet is upgraded, it will reconnect as vdsl.
You are aware that you have to place an order with a suitable ISP, it doesn't just get automatically upgraded ?

I suggest it depends on the exact meaning of the original question, i.e is it about cash or operation details.
I took it as " Is there a modem which can be used on ADSL and VDSL ? " in which case the answer is YES but .....
If it means " Can one plug ADSL or VDSL into the same socket on the same modem ?" no way !

As before, re-read the question.
