What speed am I likely to get?

I've just ordered PN Fibre to replace PN ADSL2 as the 'retention' monthly cost is only £12.50 for 38Mbps service. I'm 100m from the Green Box, so it'll be copper from there to very old wiring in my home. Anyone any idea of what actual speeds I might get? And what I should ask Openreach enginer to do, to optimise my final connection? Please?

Is that 100m direct line or actual path length? Can you follow the line from eaves to pole, to pole, to pole, to underground to cabinet and give that distance, allowing and extra 6m for going up the pole, and 4 metres to allow for the transit underground and back up.

What does the BT wholesale checker estimate for you?

and put your postcode only, and hit submit. Then select your address from the list it offers.

I get 80/20 at 350-400 metres of cable, so if your cable length is similar to the "direct path" (which I take to mean "as the crow flies"), and made of copper, then you'll get good speeds.

You should get maximum speeds at that distance.

I'm impressed with WWWombat's speeds - I will be 600m from cab when FTTC arrives so it's good to see high speeds being reported at longer distances

When i had Sky ADSL2 before i got fibre, I recorded my ADSL status before i got switched over on the green box, I have no idea if this will give you any idea what speed you be expecting

On fibre i get 57 down and 18 up

B4dger don't get your hopes up too much, it very much depends on the quality of you line. I'm exactly 450 meters by cable route confirmed by BT enginer and I'm currently getting 46Mbps, lowest it's been is around 38, highest for any length of time was 47. At work we get around 39 (500 meters with attainable of 44), yet the newer buildings opposite are estimated at 80 on the same cabinet and only slightly closer.

It's the distance from your home to your local FTTC cabinet that's the key with FTTC.

They are more like TBB's speed estimates that I linked to - that's what I'm working with. I'm on a longish (48db attenuation) line a few miles from the exchange.
So going from 6Mb to 30+ would be a great improvement for me

ADSL line stats mean almost nothing when estimating the FTTC/VDSL2 capability.

The only useful piece of information that it can give is if the speed achieved is what would normally be achieved on a line with the given attenuation figures, the ratio of down to up attenuation and SNR. If that looks about right it will suggest the line from cabinet to property is OK and should not adversely impact FTTC.
