Install complete in Forres

Well, the Kellys engineer has left and I now have a nice, spanking fast FTTC install through Zen.

I don't know if ours is the first cabinet live in Forres (NSFRS), but I'm the second user live on our cabinet (the first person was the appointment before me). The engineer even moved the master socket and put the modem where I wanted. It's amazing what an offer of a real coffee can do...

Currently getting results on the TBB speed tester of 61.17Mbps which I'm very happy with - will see how it goes over the next few days.

I'm in Elgin and got my install yesterday, 80meg . I was the first on the cabinet.

Forres just went live recently so I think you're on of the first

I live 2 minutes from Union Terrace in Aberdeen City centre and I can't get FTTC!

I live in Forres and am very jealous How did you find out that FTTC was enabled?

Is that speedtest using wireless? If so, try wired. That's not a healthy graph, even though like the rest of us you are initially gob-smacked at the speed.

NapoliBill - Which cabinet are you on? I know not all of the Forres cabs are live yet (in fact I walked past one the other day that has only just been stood) so looks like you're one of the lucky ones too.

RobertoS - Nope, that was run on a wired connection. I'll try another one later as I'm on my laptop right now but if it's not great then it could also be the router interfering as I'm on an older Draytek 2820, and I'm fairly sure they are not too great for the higher throughput of 80/20 FTTC.

Not sure which cabinet but I've checked with Zen, Newnet, Plusnet and BT and they all say FTTC is available to me. I live between the golf course and Leanchoil but don't know where my cabinet would be. I seem to remember reading that cabinet 4 was going live so wonder if that is the one I am on.

Yes, I sold my 2820 about 3 months after moving onto Fibre, and noticed a useful increase. The 2820 is really only supposed to handle around 42megabit download, some have seen more, but its an older design now and not really upto the FTTC speeds whilst handling the PPPoE.

Aye, to be honest it's getting on for 7 years old now so a bit overdue a replacement. I'm just so busy renewing everyone else's network hardware that I don't get a chance to do my own...

I think I'll be going for the 2860 next. At the moment the BT modem is in the living room, and the router is in the loft with the network switch & there's CAT5 running between the two points. If I go for the 2860, I can choose between putting the router in the living room & getting rid of the BT modem, or putting the router in the loft and still using the WAN port.

If its a Huawei HG612 modem then I would unlock it, link LAN2 to an internal switch port, and keep it as the modem, as you can then monitor the stats with various tools or scripts. Mine has been very stable.

I went for an ASUS (first N66U, now an AC68U) and it has 90% of the features of the Draytek (no IPsec VPN server) that I used, but for a significantly less sum. Plus they're both dual band WiFi which Draytek are still missing.

Unfortunately, it looks like an ECI modem so I don't think I'll be able to unlock it.

As far as the routers, the IPSec VPN is actually a feature I use to connect in to my customers networks so I need to stick with the Drayteks. Plus I am a big fan of them. And as far as dual-band, there are dual band versions of each Draytek model available now.

That makes sense. The Asus models have OpenVPN and PPTP but not IPSec. I suspect one of the third party firmwares might introduce it and then Asus might include it. Suspect not much demand

When I last looked they were all switchable dual band, not simultaneous, which is pretty irritating - but the pretty new 2860n-Plus model is finally simultaneous. Wow !
