HG612 and HH5 or ditch the HG612

[link to this post]

FTTC will be available to me soon. I've got 1150m of line between me and the cabinet and want to give myself the best possible chance of getting a reasonable sync speed. I've go a HG612 openreach modem that was given to me. Is there any advantage to using this or should I just go with the HH5 ? Thanks in advance.

Go with the HG612 and a router of your choice, HH5 is terrible

Use the HG612 on the line, and plug any router into it using Ethernet. The HG612 is very very stable. The HH5 can be connected using ethernet, but people say ignore it, and get your own router. AC routers are expensive, N routers are cheaper.

If it has a WAN socket to take the feed from the HG612, (an ordinary ethernet LAN socket will not do), and you are happy with it now then it should be fine.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet UnLim Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 58.7/14.6Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Both the HH4 and HH5 have a WAN socket that can do PPPoE.

HH4 needs the modem to work with fibre, like the HH3.

Use the HG612.

You have a looooooooonnnnnnnnnnng line and everything will be highly attenuated so any localised noise in the house will have a significantly greater effect on the signal. Install the HG612 as close as possible to the master, (and consider, if possible, moving the master to reduce internal cable lengths and noise pick up). Then install a couple of RJ45 sockets, linked with Cat5e to take the HG612 output to wherever you require it.

Okay so the vote is to go with the VDSL2 modem, the question is should I use HH4 or 5 as wifi/hub?

The HH will be a full router, as well as wifi and switch. The HH5 is better as it apparently solves the problem of wireless devices on the 2.4GHz band not being able to see devices on the 5GHz band.

You connect the red ethernet socket on the back of the HH5 to the LAN1 socket on the HG612.

I'd agree if they were being connected directly to the line, but with the modem that should protect the line from the HH software problems.

Agreed, if it was my money, I'd recommend buying a decent Asus RT-AC68U like mine, but they're around £130 smile

Okay that's the plan the VDSL modem attached via the shortest possible modem cable (my master socket comes straight into my house off the line couldn't reduce the line length if I wanted). Then attach wifi router via cat5e. Here's hoping, but I guess anything is better than the 1.7 Mbps I get now. Just need Openreach to plug the fibre to my fttc cabinet before it rusts away they seem to take an age to pull abit of hose pipe down a duct!

Fail to see why the hate for the HH5 i must be honest. Mine is rock solid and i find the 5GHz side of the WiFi brilliant, this is result is with the HH5 in the next room separated with a brick all.

Nothing wrong with the 2.4GHz side of things, its just not as fast.

Modem is under the bed with my old HH3 as a spare.

I'm wondering if there are batch problems. That would explain why many are fine and some are problematic.

5GHzis great isn't it? Especially with an AC router and AC client - my devices are mostly N only but with an AC router they are doing better - my next phone/tablet/pc upgrade will have AC.

I stopped using my HH5 as I kept getting the internal LAN/WLAN disconnecting all devices - coincided with the router logs showing connections back to BT checking for config changes. This could happen 2 or 3 times a night.

Since going back to a separate modem with a Billion 7800 router it has been perfect and I have had no dropouts.

I liked the HH5 but there appears to be no fix publicly available for the issue I was seeing so I gave up with it.
