Poor sync?

Ok so not really that poor as I'm getting almost 80Mbps but I'm surprised given how close I am that the stats are not better.

Anything I can do to improve things?...

Plugging the Sky Hub (SR102) into the test socket increases the connection speed to 79604kbps but still not the full 80Mbps... I'm probably less then 100 meters of phone line from the Fibre cabinet so had expected the full sync speed.

Can you be sure that the route your line takes from the pole to the PCP then the Cab is direct? Sometimes they can go a different way and then go back on themselves. Are you taking in to account the length of the line from your socket to the top of the pole then the distance from the top of the pole to the ground?

Is the Cab new? (it may be that it has many connections already and you have some crosstalk lowering sync.)

Your line might not be 100% copper but a mix with some Aluminium.

Could be any number of reasons.

It is a new line in a new estate, all underground so can not be sure of the route. There are two options following BT manholes. The longest would be ~80 meters and that is allowing for some slack and extra to go up and into my flat. I'd say 100~150 meters is fair any more and they'd be wasting cable just looping it around for no reason.

The line within the building from downstairs to my BT master socket is actually Ethernet cable. I can probably look at the BT cable that comes in to see if this is copper and what gage this is...

But with an attenuation of just 8.6dB shouldn't it be giving the full sync speed? I'm sure I've seen connections with double or more the attenuation with full sync speeds.

Maybe I should pick up a BT Openreach modem and unlock it so I can see full line stats ... if I get that bored.

It is not the attenuation that is the cause but NOISE. With just of 6dB of SNR your modem will have sync'd at 6dB and with minor change is natural.

There could be terrestrial noise - from radio transmitters, domestic noise from electrical equipment in the building or cross talk.

I wonder how the building is heated?

A new build has to be copper. AIUI from this document Openreach install that, so it should be to spec.

All electric heated.

Cables from the ground floor DP are Ethernet (Cat5e). They do however run along/with the door bell entry system and Sky/TV/FM cables. So noise could be from this.

Oh well vectoring may help in the future.

Can you check to see that the link from DP uses a twisted pair.

As for vectoring - it will do nothing for localised noise from non DSL sources.

Turned the doorbell entry system off and the noise didn't change so probably not from that.

Also power cables are bundled with the same bunch of cables... it's a mess!
