Detailed FTTH Network Building?

[link to this post]

Is there any good single resource out there that goes into the detailed work needed to build an independent/altnet FTTH network. I'm looking for something that goes all the way from conception, to design, to actually building - something detailed enough to produce a "back of a fag packet" cost estimate for anyone interested in such things. There are quite a few web pages on FTTH construction but it all seems rather disorganised.

In theory it is easy enough but then most things are. Obviously actually doing it requires skill and experience.

B4RN is nice and simple in high level design. Have a read of their documents.

Cost depends on the distance between properties, whether the cables will be buried, what trunking is provided, availability of back haul, etc. Take a look at what Hyperoptic, Gigaclear and B4RN do.

Also you've got to link into BT's fibre at some point as well. Or Vodafone's, but the majority of time it'll be BT. Not many companies would be able to afford to lay their own long distance fibre network.

.......and also whether the digging between houses is in soft grass verges (cheap) or hard surface as in tarmac footpaths & roads requiring (expensive) restitution.

Or Virgin Media or City Fibre or a number of other firms with large fibre backbones

That's news to me that City Fibre have their OWN long distance fibre backbone. Are you sure about that? Never once hace I seen a manhole with City Fibre on it. A lot of these firms that people think have their own network actually just link back into a BT duct.

They are indeed, but it's the links between the towns and cities where BT and Vodafone (ex C&W) come in, and to a smaller degree Virgin Media.

But yes of course if City Fibre are building in a specific city it makes sense for them to build out their own network in that area rather than relying on someone else

Yes but Level 3 is all about interconnects between data centres and sub-sea cables. So you'll see their network in big city centres and near where the cables come up from the sea.
