Another Christmas comes and goes...

[link to this post]

Its two years now since my exchange was fibre-enabled. But despite being reasonably near the centre of my small town, there is still no sign of my cabinet being upgraded. When it was possible to contact Openreach by email, they told me all sorts of stuff including various dates, but so far nothing. Our BDUK project also doesn't seem interested since I'm not rural (and they seem to think my cabinet is part of the commercial rollout - despite the fact this seems to have ended). Oh well, maybe fibre will be my present for the end of next year?

Merry Christmas everyone!

The BDUK project is doing some work on that exchange, so they do know about it, but no sign of cabinet 42 being the lucky one.

Current target is 90% with access to fibre based, so you might be in the 10% that miss out, but a longer term goal of 24 Mbps or faster to all who want it by 2018 is part of the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire project.

Generally it is cabinets that cover more premises that are getting done, and if lots of those in other parts of the county you might be missed out, and some areas have seen concerted campaigns to do more of the rural areas first.

Thanks for the info.
I think my cabinet might be quite small. I also realise that being reasonably close to the exchange means I get a pretty good ADSL speed. So I can understand why we've been passed by. Still rather frustrating though.
Happy Christmas.

It's probably down to BT considering it uneconomical to provide. Either the engineering costs are too high or the cabinet doesn't support enough customers to be able to make a profit! I doubt ADSL speed has anything to do with it, I'm in a similar position to you except for having only 3Mbps and BT say my cabinet is not economically viable, as do BDUK!
I share your frustration.

I'm in the same position.
In my case I think the reason is that the house population density near to the cabinet is quite small, while that further away is larger.
So if it was upgraded (serves around 200 houses) the number of people able to actually get a true superfast service due to their distance from the cab' would be rather lower than average.
So BDUK concentrate their resources on more favourable cabinets to upgrade.

There are no logistical problems to an upgrade as power is available from an electric pole nearby and best of all, fibre to other cabs which are being enabled actually runs past this cab en-route to them!

The openreach where and when site says that your cabinet is under review, so you can't order fibre http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/

How did you find that? When I look I get the blue question mark that says :
Superfast Fibre is in your area but we cant tell by your postcode if you can get it right now.

How odd? I never thought to try a different postcode on the same cabinet. I wonder why I get a different result using my postcode?
Anyway, thanks for that. Under Review at least sounds a bit more promising. Maybe next Christmas? smile

Distance to the cabinet is the usual reason

I wouldn't get too excited - according to the when and where site...

'Weve already rolled out fibre broadband to more than two-thirds of the UK and are busy addressing the final third with the help of our public sector partners'

Not sure where the public sector partners (ie Councils) are going to get the money from. My cab funding gap is £16k + Vat and there are 4 similar small cabinets not connected in an area where everyone else has fibre. Its all residential so no hope of businesses helping out. Maybe it's time to remind all local Councillors and the MP there are elections coming up soon!

We can get Virgin, but I much prefer to have competition in the area.

Current on Zen, getting around 5mb down - .8mb up
Exchange is Fibre enabled, street cab not economically viable to upgrade.

I understand the reasons why you would want to have FTTC but if there is already Virgin Cable available I would not say it is a priority area. Many people would love to have that option.

The BDUK can't fund cabs in areas that already have Virgin, it is against the rules as there is already commercial provision. Or should I start having a go at my council that I only have BT available and they should pay for Virgin to cover the area as well?

BDUK was never an option in Birmingham - in fact Virgin and BT both took Birmingham City council to court as they wanted to implement their own fibre connection.

Most of Birmingham have both Virgin and Openreach Fibre, just the small cabs the GPO installed 50 years ago are deemed uneconomically viable to upgrade (despite 200 properties being potentially connected) - so we're stuck in a uncompetitive market with a monopolistic fibre provider.

On the plus side, my Zen connection seems to have got better since Openreach broke then fixed the exchange

Current on Zen, getting around 5mb down - .8mb up
Exchange is Fibre enabled, street cab not economically viable to upgrade.

So if you already know that what exactly could the local councillors do to change your mind over voting in elections? Your previous post suggested you thought they weren't doing enough to keep your vote but as they can't fund your cabinet it is not a political issue but a business issue with BT.

While I understand the desire to have more options, I'm one of those wishing I could get Virgin, because despite living opposite the central exchange in town, our date has shifted from the end of the year to:

"This cabinet is under review. We'll explore fibre broadband solutions & will update once done.."

The bright side for us is that Hyperoptic are coming to Birmingham, and I've got a wayleave agreement they're very interested in getting signed for my building. Of course, figuring out someone who can/will sign it at the moment is proving a little harder, ah the joys of management companies going bust..

Things might be looking up - just tired the openreach when and where site and got:

Status: Coming soon

Your area will be enabled within the next six months and we'll provide more details nearer the time. At the moment you can't order Superfast Fibre.

Previously it was UR.

Hoping it's not just a glitch!

Current on Zen, getting around 5mb down - .8mb up
Exchange is Fibre enabled, street cab not economically viable to upgrade.

the fact you had a gap fund for it could make it under review -- (as it not going to done by Commericual and cant be done under BDUk as it will not be white
