DSLAM cabinet essential for Fibre?

Hi All,

I'm getting conflicting info, so after some clarification. Is a new Openreach DSLAM cabinet within 50m of the street cab essential to allow FTTC, or do some street cabs have the capability to contain the required DSLAM equipment?

BT tell me no, it can be installed in the existing street cab.
Superfast Staffordshire tell me a new cabinet is required.

Not possible in the current street cabinet that handles the telephone

1. Missing power
2. No vents for active equipment
3. No fibre to existing cabinet

In almost all cases, a DSLAM cabinet is required.

The rare (so far) exceptions are when a combined cabinet is installed, although if there is a perfectly good PCP ("normal" street cab) existing, then FTTC will just require a DSLAM cabinet connected to it. There has also been some talk about fibre to the remote node recently, although A) this isn't FTTC and B) there is still essentially a DSLAM involved somewhere, just not a traditional street cabinet.

So the answer is yes, for FTTC there will need to be a "twin" DSLAM for your existing PCP.
