Maybe the Virgin Cable forum would be the best place for your query ?

Or the networking forum as this actually has nothing really to do with Virgin as the real issue is the local network.

In this case cat5 would perform as well as cat6 but cat6 would potentially give better future proofing.

Haven't used any of the 1Gb homeplugs so don't know their actual throughput and it does depend on the home wiring as well - they may not actually give much improvement if the home electrical wiring is causing noise/attenuation.

As the other say "wrong forum".

To be precise CAT5e would be the ideal cable.

On the HomePlug 500 units, yes they will be the limiting factor see

As for the 1 Gbps units not been given any to test so cannot comment, but they will have similar drop offs so you might still not always hit 100 Mbps over a decent distance.
