FOD - will it return?

Hi.. Due to move to new build in Bedford.
I'm still amazed that very few big home builders provison good broadband.
(There is one who despite being in a more rural area worked with VM to get every home a super fast option. ).

However I'm likely on the end of a long fttc line. So may get 25-30.
Now I know many are likely worse off but im used to 150Mb VM or 80Mb Fttc connections.
Work from home (as dos the other half) so band width very important including upload speeds.

Anyway.. That said I am wondering if FOD will ever make a return.
I have no problem paying a reasonable amount for a fibre.... But FOD from what I read has been put on hold for now.

(Budget wise £200 a month for the 330 service whilst expensive in my view would possibly be affordable... Would partly be ofset against tax)

Personal opinion- probably not, gfast probably makes a more appealing business case.

On a long FTTC line, although FTTPoD does not come from the cabinet it does come from an aggregation point that is probably not far from it.

The installation costs are likely to be huge. See this page. Cost to the CP, excluding Vat, a minimum of £1100 for within 200 metres of the aggregation point, to £5125 @ 1000-1499 metres. And more for further. Even that is subject to survey and may be ruled out as impracticable by Openreach.

If you need more two fttc lines might be better value

The last article I read said it had been suspended until 30th April.

which new build in Bedford as a number dont have currently superfast broadband to do -- though some will have soon

In the g.fast announcement Openreach clearly stated they will offer a "premium FTTP option".

It's in Kempston - woodlands David wilsons build - but it's on Cab 7 so no Ft tp as far as I can tell.

I was looking into this and may end up down this route...
Doesn't help much with uploads though unless it's bonded by isp though since traffic would take one route. I do photography'/video work so requires GB uploads.

Understood... There is a closer fiber cab so may only be 400m or so, although it would of course depend on routing options but I would pay circa £1500 to get an FTTP connection.

Sure it's expensive ... But I can imagine getting really frustrated getting circa 20% of the speeds I get today. Looking into 4G solutions also.. But would prefer the fixed line option.

Are you sure the nearer one is FTTC, not Virgin Media? It's odd you should be on a more distant PCP.

Even at 400m £1500 doesn't look sufficient. Don't forget the distance-related prices need the fixed charge of £750 added.

If you can reclaim the Vat then there is only the ISP's profit margin to add otherwise. Else of course all +20%.

There are 3 FTTC Cabs in the local area. Cab 7 / 5 and 11

This estate is served by Cab 7
I will be right on a Boundary of Kempston and Cab 5 / 11 whilst closer as the Crow flies I am guessing due to history have served other areas.. The estate is in an infill site although I am surprised BT didn't put in a new PCP as there are a good few hundred homes on the site... must have still been spare capacity on the old one I suppose.

No VM on the new estate.. which is a shame.

I guess I am just hoping for an aggregation node a little closer..
I know the Fibre routing for Can 11 goes past the Estate (From speaking to local Engineer one day) about 200m away but no idea where the node is, didn't get chance to ask at the time... but.. I'll have to wait and see how good/bad it is when I move in. As its for business use offsetting against tax could still make it feasible.. but would be good to see what OR are planning... (or not.)

Believe that this premium option will be different to FoD, since by the time g.fast makes it to nodes rather than cabinets a lot more of the FTTH infrastructure is already in place

AIUI then you stand a chance of a closer aggregation point .
