Adsl2+ speed = Fibre Speed What to expect ?

Did a check for fibre came back as high 73.4 Low 54
On asdl2+ i get 20.5 Download only 200 meters from Cabinet ( EO lines before Cabinet sited outside the Exchange )
so i am expecting the full speed 76 -80 meg on plusnet
So could the full speed still be possible ?

Do you have a record of your downstream attenuation from when you were on ADSL2+? It's possible to get a reasonable estimate of the actual line length from that. Failing that, what's your downstream attenuation on fibre?

If it is actual line length you could well get full speed - I am at 400m or so and have seen 76 Mbps on a speed test, so at half distance you should have an attainable speed up in the 90s.

With straight line distance - who knows!

An attenuation of 10db ish suggests a line length of around 700m according to a couple of online checkers. I don't know how accurate these are, but that seems more or less in line with your fttc estimate. Is it possible your line takes a less direct route to the exchange, as MHC says?

For standard gauge 0.5mm copper 12dB was generally considered 1km for ADSL2+ frequencies so would go with around 700m too

Yes i think your right the cable looks like it goes the long route to me passing me on the other side of the road and up and down 2 cul de sacs, before it gets to me

So is the High figure more likely than the lowest ?

BT come up with the range by comparing your line with the behaviour of all "similar" lines. I take "similar lines" to mean lines with the same/similar attenuation between cabinet and DP.

Looking at this pool of lines, they then take the high point of the range to be the 80th percentile of the pool; the low point comes from the 20th percentile.

So 20% of lines are above the highest speed of the range, 20% are below the lowest speed, and 60% are inbetween. BT seem to accept fault reports when speeds are in the bottom 10%.

The variation across all these lines almost certainly comes from crosstalk, so you should expect your speed to start out high, in the range, and end up lower over time - but likely still within the range.

Note too that these are all line speeds (ie sync speeds). Download speeds will be lower.

i have ordered With plusnet the Ultra fibre or should i cancel and just go for
standard Fibre and if so what speed would standard bring ?

I presume you mean "Extra" not "Ultra". Extra will go as fast as your line supports. Standard fibre is capped at 40Mbps download.
