After campaigning for nine years, my mother's village in Slapton, Devon, was finally upgraded to fibre two weeks ago. I had it installed for her today.
Before (ADSL): 512kbps (maximum - was often lower, or disconnected)
After (BT Infinity): 39,999kbps
That's a speed increase of over 7000%. The moment it was made available, half a dozen people ordered and a dozen more are waiting. It hasn't transformed the village necessarily, but it's made probably the biggest impact since...I don't know when.
What this has taught me:
1) Never give up. Keep hassling everyone, from BT to your MP
2) Research constantly. Know your subject matter and don't let them [censored] you
3) The cabling from the old cabinet to the exchange must be in awful, awful condition. The line stats before and after make for interesting reading - today's, with fibre, show that the line from the house to cabinet is actually in rude health.
