Mysterious cable appeared at bottom of telegraph pole

[link to this post]

Could this be a fibre cable? We are currently in a not-spot...

Don't believe that's a fibre cable.

The cable looks rather thick - so in theory it could contain a bundle of fiber cables I suppose.
The silver connector on the end looks rather odd, I've not seen that before in BT's networks.

Well there's no reason it should be thick, there are only 12-odd dwellings downstream from there.

Oh well!

I don't think that is a connector. At first glance it looks more like the sort of valve you get on a tyre or something.

Maybe for pressurising ducting to keep water out?

That's most certainly not cable. It looks like a robust tube. Perhaps it's something fibre could get blown through. Any clue through soil/pavement disturbance where it might run too?

*** update ***

I don't want to get your hopes up (are you in an intervention area), but a bit of research reveals there is something called "direct bury sub-duct", which is just a fancy name for a plastic tube you can bury in the ground for carrying small fibre bundles. I've no idea if BT use such things, but there's some in this brochure from a telecoms ducting supplier available in a range of sizes.

(Using the term "sub-duct" for a single tube buried in the ground is a bit odd as such a thing is surely just a very small duct).

nb. Radius Telecoms are a BT supplier, but I'm not suggesting this is necessarily one of their direct bury sub-ducts.

That's not a connector. I think it's a sealing plug in a piece of heavy gauge tubing.

Oh well! Thanks for taking a look everyone.

There's no soil disturbance. There's a white tag around the bottom of the mast with a reference number and a date a few days ago.

It's a bit difficult to see how it could get there without any soil disturbance unless it's just pocked into the ground as a marker, but that surely can't be the case. The other end must go somewhere...

Could it be for injecting preservative down to the foot of a pole?

I have noted those on new/replacement phone poles erected over the past 10 years or so.

Sure it hasnt been there for a while? There is a clip on the pole that looks to be broken as if the "cable" or duct had been there for some time and you've not noticed it but recently the clip has been broken making it more obvious?

Interesting theories! I'm not sure how long it has been there actually - it was flagged to me today to have a look at. I'll see if anyone has seen it for a while.

Does seem strange there's this new tag around the base of the pole though.

The tag at the bottom of the pole indicates that someone climbed that pole on the date shown. I don't recognise that cable as anything used by Openreach. They do have pressurised E-side cables which do have little nozzles on them like that but they run between the exchange and the cabinets only and are much much thicker than the cable in your picture.

I would tend to agree that it's something to do with the pole itself though. Something to do with preservation. You can tell by the pole that it's quite old, can you get a date off the side of the pole? It'll be engraved in the wood at about the 6ft mark.

No. It's the old armoured copper cable that used feed the pole before they dug in a duct to it on the left. Someone has pulled it away from the cleats.

Initially I thought it was an armoured cable and you are probably right. But what the heck is the nozzle thing on the top?

The nozzle was what made me decide it wasn't an armoured cable.

Partial is correct, that is an old armoured cable.

The thing on the end is an old heat shrink for a pressurised E-side cable. Most likely all the guy who cut the cable had on his van to tidy it up.

You're right! I bet that's what's happened. He should have just used tape though, it would have been less confusing for us all! smile

Yeah, might of been nice of them to also put a label tag on it as well tongue
