Slow Speed

A customer of mine thinks that their FTTC speed is slower than normal.

According to thinkbroadband speed test the download is 0.9 Mbps and upload is 2.4 Mbps see Speed Test . According to BT Wholesale performance test download speed is 33.13 Mbps and upload is 6.66 Mbps.

Just wondering why the large discrepancy in speeds and which is more likely to be correct.

Both Wholesale test and TBB test were run from a Machine connected via Ethernet. Other machines on Network were on and running so may affected results but don't think would effect it that much. And did have internet open with Radio 2 streaming at same time if this makes a difference. But was sames setup for running both tests.

Repeat both tests and grab a screen shot of the BT Wholesale.

Have Task manager running at the same time with Networking tab selected. That will show the actual speeds (roughly) that the connection can achieve.

Streaming radio will affect the speed - but not massively, however do te tests with NOTHING running and NO other devices connected. The other devices will take bandwidth in the TBB case but the BT test may forcibly pause other activities.

The six threads of the httpx6 should saturate a radio stream, for video you can usually recognise the pattern visually.

If the issue the user is having is that they find day to day things are slow, but BT Wholesale test is good then the suggestion may be a peering capacity issue at the ISP.

Possibly could be peering Issues, as when then have had problems before, apparently their ISP only wants them to use the BT Wholesale Test. Which obviously may not show up all problems.

Yes I know that in theory should run the speed test with only the one machine on the network switched on with nothing running in the background so can eliminate all other factors, but surely that shouldn't give a massisve descrepancy in speed tests, unless is to do with something like peering Issue.

Can tell you that the exchange is Bovey Tracey in Devon and they are connected to cabinet 4. If anyone know if there may be a problem with some ISP's at this exchange.

If another device is using a lot of bandwidth it should be visible the graphs we show...generally httpx6 starts high and ramps down over time.
