What can I do? I'm losing packets in every direction to every website...
My provider (Talktalk) says they've tested everything from my router, to their end of things... and they can't find any faults.
I'm losing at least 10% of my packets.
I'm doing traceroutes... I'm losing 50% on the way to google. I can't play games...
They get lost on various hops. But predictably on certain sites.
What can I do?
Thank You.
All depends at which point in the journey the packets are lost...
Is there packet loss to the first hop after the routers IP address?

Are you measuring this over wifi, homeplugs or ethernet?
How do you connect to your router?
Matt
Wi-fi antenae I bought with my computer
Rule that out first.
Try with a cable to the router and turn wifi off on the computer/device.
If the packet loss does not occur, your wifi is the issue instead of the connection.

I don't have a 3 room long cable, yet.

According to Google, your router has a known problem with packet loss over wifi
Oh, I just told one employee today that I didn't want a router upgrade because I didn't expect that to be a problem. I have run this test once on my father's laptop yesterday. There was no packet loss, he's also connecting through wi-fi. I'll run it again from his machine tonight or tomorrow

Just ran it on my dad's laptop... he doesn't get the packet loss I'm getting.
Could the problem still be the router?
Possibly not. What are the two laptops?

I'm on a new desktop. He's on an old m570tu clevo (sager) from 2009

Ok so he's go an Intel® Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 series family of IEEE 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N1 wireless network adapter that operates in both the 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz spectra
What is the Wi-fi antenae you bought with your computer?

My order said
300Mbps 802.11n Wireless PCIe Adaptor (for Wireless networks)

How many aerials does it have?

Thanks for helping me tonight!
No problem.
You know, I think that may be single band whereas your Dad's is a much better dual-band draft N1.
Ok. So I'll get a better wireless adapter, and go for the router upgrade.
What adaptor should I get?
PS. I just realized that I can move my pc to the router room to test a cable connection. I'll do that tomorrow. I feel I was too sudden in jumping to conclusions. But I found the right place to ask.

If you don't mind spending around £50 then this 802.11ac dual band PCI card is excellent
(your router supports 802.11ac):
https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-Archer-T9E-Wireless...
Otherwise this cheaper 802.11n card will do the job

Thanks fellows. I'm happy and a bit embarassed to report that my problem was just my wireless.
Now to upgrade and watch my connection for the next few months.
I may not need to come back. Best internet forum!

Kill. Me.
Problem's back. This time problem occurs with a wired Ethernet connection.
I got the proposed wireless adaptor (802.11ac dual band PCI card) and it was working without any packet loss for about a week. Now, two weeks later I run the tests, and it's the same degree of packet loss, even with the wireless adaptor disabled, over wire. It's over wire now???
It`s a long shot , but on Ethernet you should be ok , try shutting down and turning off your PC and also turn off the router.
Wait about 1 minute then turn the router back on , then start your PC.
That might clear the connection.
You will always get better internet response on Ethernet because wireless is always hit or miss.
Might not work but I hope it does.

Thank you.
I tried it, but UOutility reports the same packet loss.
Any ideas?
Could this even be an ISP problem? Pretty sure there's little point in pursuing this further.

Can you create a TBB quality monitor here (you can delete it later on)
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping
If you start seeing loads of red bits on the top of your graph then indeed you're suffering from packet loss & its a problem on Talktalk's end (eg congestion) otherwise its a problem with your equipment. Might be worth trying out a different router as well.

Oh thanks!
So, I've got this
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/images/broadband-quali...
Now, Talktalk, in the multitude of times I've talked to them said they couldn't detect anything wrong with my line.
What should I do, then?
You need to click on the 'Create a new monitor' link and follow the instructions. Once your graph is live, do NOT turn off your router and after a few hours share the live BQM link.
Oh ok, sorry. I thought that was mine.
it's showing a thick Red line. I think I have a router firewall. Should I turn it off?
Not the firewall itself, but within it will be a setting to enable/disable ping responses. You need to enable.

Ok well what I see,
Under Firewall
I've got ICMP flood protecting enabled
And under ACL(?)
I've got ICMP Lan entry enabled

Hmmm. It may be the flood protection needs to be off.

Then your router is blocking the ping requests. Provide us with all the options under "security " and "firewall " sections of your router.

Uncheck all boxes under "attack protecting". If that doesn't mAke any difference switch off the firewall all together (temporarily of course)
The same settings are also in the OS , not sure where as I use Win 7 pro IE 11.
Any settings in the system [PC] will override any external settings.
Can you check that responding to pings is set to enabled in your browser or OS settings.?
It might be an OS firewall that is blocking the response that needs to be sent from your system.
It's the router/modem that needs to respond to pings not devices connected to the router. So the OS running on connected devices and their settings should be immaterial.
Okay, done that. I'll wait 10 mins.
For later, how would i disable the firewall?
Firewall level: just has two options, TalkTalk and High?
Also, I found this in the Maintain section, I don't know what it means...

I actually don't know how to disable the firewall, but.. even though the Broadband Quality Monitor is showing no new data.
With the Flood Protections disabled, I am getting no packet loss in the UOTrace anymore.
So thanks everyone.
If it's safe to leave those options off, I'll just get back to life.
But if there's something odd about how my internet has been behaving, please let me know, so that I'm not surprised and hopeless if this problem re-appears.

If that was the fact then if you had say 3 PC`s connected to the same router and wanted one to respond to ping requests and the other two to ignore the request the router or modem/router would override the internal settings.?

Are you sure it is still on the right IP address, and the IP address you are on hasn't changed? If your IP address has changed, which is likely if the router rebooted after altering a setting then you will get complete red advancing across the page. (With flood protection still off).
If it is rebooting for changes, you need to do the change, let it reboot, then look up your IP address and set up a new BQM. Deleting the old ones else you leave somebody else getting pinged.

I disabled the firewalls on my windows 10, 20 minutes ago, and it's still showing 100% packet loss on the quality monitor

Turn the flood protection back on then.
Ok, so now:
Attack protecting
Enable ICMP flood protecting: On
Enable SYN flood protecting: On
Enable ARP attack protecting: Off
And I have packet loss again.

I just googled "my public ip address" and it is showing the same digits as what the Broadband Monitor is on.

So, I got the attack and flood protection off again, and I just sent 300 packets each to 13 hops for easo.ea.com and I only got like 1% packet loss, this round. Which is much less.
But unfortunately, I sent 100 packets to 9 hops to google and I saw 10% packet loss.
I've just sent another 100 packets, and it's 0 packet loss?
Does the router have to adjust behaviorally or something?
It's slightly better, so can I leave the flood protection off?

This is beginning to look like TalkTalk have a problem with there infrastructure or somewhere that is messing with your line , even though they are saying it is ok.?
You could leave flood protection off I guess if it makes thing a bit better.?
You stated:

Is the good section showing on the graph.?

Thank You Mate.
No, the website graph application is 100% packet loss, for 5 hours now, I shut it off.
I used a Poll on a UOTrace utility application, that does a quick test, and it's going fine currently.
If the problem comes back, I'll try another ISP, and if it remains, I'll just be the first person to never use technology every again.
Any good Internet Providers out there?

Since your packet loss disappeared when altering router settings it's clear it's a hardware issue. I suggest you do a hardware reset on the router, and then manually configure the router wifi settings. Give both wifi radios unique names e.g. example_2G and example_5G. On the 2.4ghz choose channel 6 and on 5ghz network choose channel 48. Leave firewall/security settings as they are. Report back if packet loss still exists.

But that's just my 2 cents.

Hehehe.
Turns out changing the provider to Origin Broadband didn't help.
I've still got packet loss, so I'm out of here.

Good news. I changed back to talktalk. They sent us a new router, that costs like £100 on ebay, so they've upped their game. And checking it now, there's no packet-loss. I'll test for months ahead, but looking like it really was just the router at fault. Also btw, Origin Broadband don't provide internet, they provide fees. Downvoting Origin Broadband in the UK. Bad bad, bad company. They don't even have phone lines.
