VDSL2 noise margins
Currently the default target downstream noise margin is set to 6dB.
From March 2017 the target downstream noise margin shall be set to either 3, 4, 5 or 6dB
the actual value shall be determined by the Dynamic Line Management (DLM) algorithm based on line stability.

Based on our observations speed increases are roughly in line with the following figures.

~ For existing Sync speeds of around 20Mbps - each 3dB is worth 3Mbps
~ For existing Sync speeds of around 40Mbps - each 3dB is worth 6Mbps
~ For existing Sync speeds of 60Mbps or more - each 3dB is worth 11Mbps.

BT wholesale ADSL (copper) lines already have a 3dB profile available to them. Obviously this increase wont make any difference if you are already syncing at the maximum speed ie 80Mbps or 40Mbps if you are on a 40/10 or 40/2 product.

Yep. But sadly Target 3dB SNRm won't benefit me at all. Stayed with 80/20 (wish openreach uncapped 80/20 for the line to go faster as it support to the maximum Attainable Rate)

Unlikely to happen with G.fast around the corner. If people close to the cab could get say 120meg with VDSL2 unrestricted then they're not going to pay the premium for 160meg. However, a doubling of the speed from 80 to 160 by upgrading to G.fast will be more appealing and appear as "better value for money".

This has been testing for a while in certain areas. I've yet to see it on a line though presumably wasn't in my area.

On my service, on a stable line with the connection speeds you see in my sync, I'll be quite pleased to see this.

Relatively few people are close enough to get 80/20, and many in 40/n can't even get that. I'll be quite surprised in G.Fast comes in free.
