Is it worth going from Infinity 1 to Infinity 2?

Hi all, long time no post

I've had Infinity 1 installed for the last few months and since getting a TP-Link VR600 and giving the HH6 the boot, my download speed has increased from ~35mbps to 46-47mbps. Current stats below.

Nothing will change, you will only ever get what the line is capable of and that is 50 meg which you already have

If you have not already checked out your phone lines, internal and external, by doing a (series of) Quiet Line Tests, I suggest that you do so, and taking any action implied.

No matter the modem/router, your ultimate speed etc are directly dependent upon the phone line; and the QLT is a free, easy way of getting that sorted out.

Unfortunately it is not available on some phones - but its concept does allow you to assess the quality of your line - particularly if you can also compare with other lines, such as parents, friends etc.

Use a corded phone.

Dial 17070 etc, select Option 2 most lines (or Oprion 4 SKY).

Listen through about 5 repeats of the QLT annoincement, about 75 seconds.)

Oh, I thought I was capped at that level as I'm on the 52 meg service. I know I'm a few hundred meters from the cabinet, was just hoping maybe I might get another 10 or 15 meg.

The max rate is what you could get if the line wasn't capped. Seeing as your cap is 55Mbps, the uncapping it won't give you any more.

There is no technical difference between the Infinity 1 and Infinity 2 speeds other than one is capped at 55 and the other at 80. The same as the upstreams are capped at 2, 10 to 20.

Take a look at the graph a little way down on this page-

That suggests that your phone line, from the (older) PCP Phone Line Distribution cabinet, plus the necessary additional link from the (new/recent) FTTC VDSL cabinet is around 600 to 700 Meters.

This may be substantially longer than any of the more obvious distances.

In my case, the FTTC is 10 Meters from my front door, the PCP is 40 Meters across the road - BUT the phone line length including the link, on what was a green-field site, is about 300 Meters.

This (excessive) length came to light when sorting out noisy line problems back in the dial-up days.
