Hi
I'm a recent convert from BT and whilst my TV, mobile and tablet have all connected to the faster 5g my laptop(Windows 10, i5 processor) has connected at slower speed. When I check my network status both are green lighted. I was looking to go into settings to try connect to 5g but don't know admin password or indeed what user id and password to use to try sign on in my own name!
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Is it the BT Hub? If so there is a plastic white card on the back with all the details on which you can pull out.
If it's another router let us know.

Does the laptop have a wireless adapter that recieves higher band reception or is it limited to 2.5g?

Register (or login) on our website and you will not see this ad.

Try again with laptop next to router to see if problem is poor distance reception by laptop. Distance that it gets 5g will always be much lower than 2.4g band

No it's router from sse. I have card with settings, passwords etc but none of them work to get into admin settings.

I'm within a few feet of router and unrestricted view. How would I know if laptop WiFi is 2.5 or more?

Okay then all I can suggest is do a hard reset (put a paperclip in the reset hole until the lights go out, usually 10 seconds) and see if you can get in after it finishes the cycle. If so great if not then you will need to be calling them.

admin pw for pc or router? Does pc have 5GHz capability? ("5g" is likely to be confused with 5g, at least, when it arrives).
Is it possible that your pc is not using a userid/pw? Did you set one up. You should be able to right mouse click the "Network internet access" icon, bottom right on the status bar, and take it from there.
Windows 10?

Hi John
The user id/password request is when I log into network on laptop. It opens screen for sse router which gives details like ipn address, WiFi status etc There is a pop up settings box when trying to open these sub sections. It's at this point it asks for admin Id/password. None of the details on the router card work.
Probably need to contact sse helpdesk for codes

I think people would need to see screen shots, joining a wireless network usually means picking the visible SSID and entering the security key, nothing to do with admin id and password. It may be that you are actually trying to log into the routers web interface perhaps.

You say a recent convert from BT. To which ISP?
Are you using the new ISP's router?
Ah . SSE and yes.

That seems to be what he wants to do Andrew, to alter the router's wifi settings. But barking up the wrong tree. It has to be a problem with his laptop if it's only connecting on 2.4GHz when his other kit is getting 5GHz.

If your ISP is SSE, then your router is Technicolor.
For them, login details are as follows (unless SSE messed with it):
Login - Administrator
Password - router's serial number in capital letters
But honestly, I think your PC has got no 5 GHz WiFi.
How to check: open Device Manager (open start menu and type it into the search box).
Find Network Adapters section
Copy the name for your wireless adapter and Google it.
If it doesn't say 802.11ac, it won't have 5 GHz, so don't break your router.

I have had a similar problem with a HP laptop (Windows 10, i5 processor) where the network details in task manager indicate that it connected at any thing between 2Mb/s and 54 Mb/s depending on what it felt like. I returned it to HP under warranty to have the Broadcom adapter replaced, but not much changed, and it was not uncommon to give these indicated variations in speed when at a distance of only a couple of metres,in clear view of the router.
Other older laptops in the house, and much further away from the router indicated stable connections at 54 Mb/s.
However, carrying out speed tests when the adapter was indicating 2mB/s showed download speeds of a steady 15Mb/s (my normal speed). I can only conclude that the adapter/widows software is telling me lies and there must be a software bug!
I would mention that this is a regular event and not a 'one off''

This is very common and is just down to the individual cards. As you mention the throughput generally is ok as the transmit rate increases when throughput increases.

Try updating the driver, it's easily done. In Win 10;
Right mouse click the Windows logo on the extreme bottom left of your screen,
Select Device Manager
Scroll down to "Network adapaters"
Right mouse click your wifi card and select "Update Driver Software".
When it asks if the new driver is to be obtained from your pc or the internet, tell it "internet".
You might want to create a Restore Point first, just in case. (Left mouse click over the Windows logo, start typing "Create Re....." and it will appear).
This being Windows there are probably fourteen other ways of doing the same thing.
