New to fibre with BT Infinity 1, couple of questions.

Hi, I've recently switched to fibre with BT Infinity 1. I'm pleased so far, no problems, I've got 55/10 sync and getting throughput of approx. 51 download and 9 upload. My noise margins though caught my eye. With my previous EE ADSL2+ connection my noise margins were if memory serves me right 6/6 around that, a bit of fluctuating, but now on Infinity 1 the Smart Hub shows 12.5/7.9, I'm connected on the same mk3 filtered NTE as before, nothing changed there, just plugged new router into what I already had.

Also with VDSL is the line attenuation figure now distance to the fibre cab rather than distance to the exchange, on ADSL2+ my line attenuation was 29.5 and now on VDSL it is 18.5?

The reason you have a higher noise margin is that you have a fixed 55/10 package and are syncing at the maximum capped rate. If you went for Infinity 2 those noise margins would reduce and the speed would increase.

So are my noise margin figures normal levels for my kind of capped rate?

That depends on how long your line is. On my line a 55 capped rate would be 6dB as I only get about 45Mb. On a very short line the noise margin would be very high. It is all in relation to the line length as to how much margin would be available for any particular speed.

And yes, VDSL2 attenuation is from the FTTC cabinet, via the phone cabinet (PCP).

Bear in mind that VDSL2 attenuates much more rapidly than ADSLx, which is why at very long distances from the cabinets ADSLx can in fact be the faster.

It's also the reason why in-home wiring is even more important than on ADSLx. Once you are into the "well below maximum" of the package even a few metres can cost megabits per second.

Yeap, and attenuation figures are now just for the home to the fibre cabinet, but are not directly comparable due to the much higher frequencies of VDSL2 compared to ADSL2+
