It's due to gravity - broadband signals move much faster when going downhill.

Or perhaps there is a dodgy connection and it just happens to make better contact when upside down?

Yep, that�s why poles are handy, the data slides down the wires from there better.

Is that why I only get 45Mbps? My cabling is all underground - who do I petition to get overhead cables installed?

Keep cutting through your underground cabling, you�ll be charged plenty, but they�ll eventually concede and put them up in the air to stop you doing it.

If you leave the cable unplugged that can happen - amazing how many bytes are lost if people forget to plug the cable in. Also can do serious damage to carpets and clog up your hoover.
