I'm thinking about having a go on the G.Fast ride, seeing as i'm in a trial area and the G.Fast pod on my cabinet has just been activated.
However, the speeds on the BT Wholesale checker seem strange, i'm no more than 100m from my cabinet and currently have full 80/20 @ 3.5 SNR, however the estimator gives less for a G.Fast connection (not sure what the "Amber" status is about either);

Checked on my neighbours address, gives another set of figures;

Seems strange, does anyone have a clue what's going on here? Maybe random because no one has an active G.Fast connection on this cabinet?

Did you not get the full 80/20 without the 3db margin then ?
What is your current attenuation ?

Amber is a new one, maybe its ready but not fully commissioned, or was live and had an issue.
On checker needs the retailer to take it up and pass down the chain.

If you're less than 100m from the cabinet how the heck does it require a 3dB NM to get 80/20?
I'm ~300m (GEA test estimate) from my cabinet and achieve those speeds with 9.4dB/14.9 dB NM

seems he got very bad luck with crosstalk or an issue somewhere.
currently on my nearly 400m line which has 50m of ali full 80/20 with 9db spare on the DS snrm.

Perhaps as the crow flies, but with those estimates and you only getting roughly 70Mb @ 6dB snrm then your line is longer than you think.

yeah those estimates the line isnt 100m for sure, nice catch.
|
|
|
Probably nearer 350 to 400m but needs to state the attenuation to give a real estimation of distance.

If you would like to PM me the full address, I will be happy to run a G-Fast check for you with BT
Thank you

Thank you for that - I have PM'd a member of staff and will see what they need from me to make that happen.

Yep, looks good. From now on all your posts will have the tag

and 'isp' will appear under your username on the left side of your posts.

Awesome catch guys, threw that in there to test you all!
Yes, sorry, I am more than 100m from the cab, following a road via Maps it's just over 200m, so probably a bit longer depending on the cable run.

I'm sure I had a higher SNR when I was with Sky, but I didn't keep any logs to prove it..

On a previous line, I had an attenuation of 16.5dB, where the line was around 375m long. In 2012, it had an attainable of 90/24. When we left in late 2014, that had gone to 78/22 ... when a 6dB target was the norm.
I'd say you're somewhere around 400m too, and hanging on to a decent speed, in spite of crosstalk.
That kind of distance is probably too far to get decent G.Fast behaviour. That may improve with future variants, or if BT work out how to re-use the VDSL2 spectrum.

That'll be crosstalk
