Speed Drop - 76MB running at 62ishMB - Cloudscape

[link to this post]

Guys,

I'm with cloudscape, some may have seen the post about the problems with the service being provided via the Voda backbone, which is now resolved as they moved me to the BTW network.

However, my sync speeds were great to begin with, and I was getting around 72mb when I first moved, but over the time since the move, been over a few months now I've noticed the speed drop to around 62mb,

I've contacted cloudscape and they've said it could be a DLM issue, they said they would log a call with BT and get them to check etc etc.... that was on the 23rd April, I emailed them today for an update and am currently waiting for an update.

Anyway, any thoughts on anything I can check at my end? Any changes that I might need to make? My router is an Asus DSL AC-68U..

What are your stats - are you now on an interleaved connection? Were you previously on FastPath or G.INP enabled? Openreach disabled G.INP for "unsupported" modems some months ago. I ended up buying a Draytek Vigor 130 to restore my speed after my Asus DSL-AC68U dropped about 6Mbps sync rate and went from FastPath to interleaved.

The Asus DSL-AC68U router is notorious for causing issues on FTTC lines d/t the unstable Mediatek dsl chipset it uses. You should think about getting a replacement or at least stop using the dsl part on the Asus. If you want to stick with an Asus router, something like the DSL-AC88U will be a good choice as it uses a Broadcom chipset. Otherwise hook up a Draytek 130 or Huawei HG612 modem to the DSL-AC68U and put the Asus in router only mode.

That sounds like Asus marketing spin.
OpenReach disabled G.INP on Asus DSL modems with the Mediatek chipsets. Only Asus devices were affected.

Other "unsupported" modems (that haven't passed the OpenReach MCT (modem conformance test)) still continue to work with G.INP.

The Mediatek chipsets are very naughty. OpenReach should have banned their use a long time ago. Just the ability to disable UPBO should see it banned. That absolutely cripples neighbours uploads.

As mentioned, OpenReach removed retransmission (G.INP) from these modems. That means the line can no longer have the SNRM target lowered either. The combination of those 2 changes can cost as much as 15Mb, more if interleaved.

I recommend you replace it with either a new modem router combined unit, or get a new modem and use the Asus as a router.
You can flash the Asus with the 3rd party Merlin firmware (Yes, the RT-AC68U merlin firmware works on the DSL-AC68U).

The newer Asus DSL-AC88U has a Broadcom xdsl chipset instead of the awful Mediatek chipset in the DSL-AC68U. That would be a great choice and future proofing for G.FAST. It's pricey at £200 though.
Your current sync suggests you may be too far for G.Fast.

how can I check these things? No idea if I'm on an interleaved connection.

I've got a Another Asus that was supplied by Cloudscape, I'll plug that in to see if there are any changes, if there aren't I'll possibly use the BT modem or get a newer modem/router combo.

It's only just started happening recently, Cloudscape supply the Asus DSL N17U, which I was using without issue for ages. I'll plug that back in to see if there are any changes, although it also uses the Mediatek chipset.
