Speed Increase Without Speed Increase [?!]

[link to this post]

I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than I am can provide some help. Until yesterday, I was receiving 40 down/10 up service from Gamma. My achieved download speed was 36 to 38 down and 8 to 9 up, with my modem connecting at 40000 down and 10000 up and a SNR of 14 to 16 both directions. Today, my new 80 down/20 up service kicked in. My modem is connected at 60790 down and 16756 up with SNR of 6 in both directions. However, there seems to be little change in my achieved speed. The TBB speedtest I just ran was 35.5 down and 8.7 up.

When the speedtest starts, it initially spikes up close to 50 before dropping back to 36. I had hoped for a real increase in speed and am quite disappointed that this seems to have made no difference. I have restarted both my Asus RT-AC66U router and DrayTek Vigor 130 modem. I am connected to my master socket thanks to assistance rendered a few months ago by GregorMac who thought I should be able to achieve a download connection speed of 66 based on some command line input into my modem after the changes we made to my internal wiring.

Could anyone provide some suggestions as to what is going on and how to improve my achieved speed to a level closer to the modem connection speed. Many thanks in advance for your help, and I'm very appreciative of having the TBB Forums to consult for this assistance, particularly since the providers themselves seem incapable of delivering a high quality of customer service.

It sounds like you're synching at the higher rate, but perhaps the ISP is still throttling you to previous speed cap. Would be worth giving them a call to check.

Thanks for the suggestion. Ive sent off an email to the person handling this at my ISP, New Star Networks. Hopefully someone there will be able to diagnose what is going on.

I'm feeling dumb at the moment but just realised that I had inadvertently set a speed limit in my router for connections to the net. Once I moved the cap up, my speed has increased to 52 down and 15 up. I'm hoping this will increase gradually, but there is no longer a problem. Thanks to those who attempted to help.

Oops !

One thing I often suggest when running speedtests to check for problems like your is to have Task Manager (or the iOS equivalent) running. Under windows, it may not give a totally accurate figure but does give a graphical image that indicates what is actually happening rather than the oddities various testers throw in.

On the https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest we have been very careful to try and ensure that interface card monitoring is not significantly different to the speed test display

Network card should always have fractionally higher speeds too, since test is HTTP/TCP versus IP of the Ethernet card
