I posted about this on the TalkTalk forum originally but would like to get some thoughts from people that actually know what they're on about - so I posted on Yahoo Answers.... just kidding. But anyway...
Over the last few months (probably the best part of a year now) my internet connection has become incredibly unstable. Dropping as much as 10 times a day. Other times I'll be lucky and get maybe a week out of it before it drops. When it does drop out, it connects within a minute or two later. There are rare occasions where it'll go a week without a drop, but that's typically luck more than anything.
Looks like it drops out for around 15 seconds or so, so not a great deal of time. But it physically loses sync when it happens.
As far as basic fault finding goes: It's a Billion 8800NL Modem/Router connected directly into the master socket with the smallest modem cable I could find. No other devices are connected to the phone line (not a single phone).
Prior to the spate of heavy disconnections (which was many months ago now), my speed was around 30Mb, but each time it drops, it loses a little more speed. It's now around 22Mb.
As a side note, my line is heavily interleaved resulting in really high pings and is pretty horrible in general.
So recently I started logging the details from the modem to a database so I can graph it and see what the hell is actually going on in terms of SNR, speed, etc. And well, it doesn't look great.
You can see the latest 24 hours here - https://i.imgur.com/2v3vAgN.png - the blue line on he bottom graph is the downstream SNR. What should be a mostly straight line is... very much not.
TalkTalk claim they've found no problems with the line and that it's fine. Clearly it's not and they didn't seem phased by the graphs I sent them every day when I checked back in with them.
So yeah. thoughts? I'm plugged into the test socket at the moment and using a brand new modem cable, so that rules out the fascia and cable.
On a semi-related note: Early last year, our sync speed jumped up to just over 30Mb (both sync and actual attained) which is far higher than it's ever been at any point in the past with any provider or equiptment (best scenario before was a max sync of 25Mb and an actual sync of around 23Mb). Any one know why I may have had a magical few months with nearly 10Mb (50%) higher speeds than usual? (my neighbour only gets 22Mb so the 20Mb garbage is nearly expected).
