Extension cables?

[link to this post]

Still on adsl2+ but thinking of upgrading to fibre. At present because most of the devices attached to the router are in my room i have the router there. So i have a cat5 shielded phone extension cable that runs from the master socket to my bedroom (5 metres or so) where the router is. From there i have an Ethernet cable that connect my PC and Xbox. Prefer to have them wired as more reliable and faster than wifi.

Anyway can you use extension cables with a fibre service? I know its recommended to have the router near the master socket, but seeing i have all the cables inplace can i just have the router in my room and use the extension cables without issue?

If you have any other telephone extension cables running from the master socket then you should connect them via a filtered faceplate.

There is no harm in trying what you want. The additional 5 meters should not make much difference provided it does not run close to some source of interference.

Is a filtered faceplate something that is fitted for me during installation? (unless i go for self install)

If by fibre you mean FTTC/VDSL2 then no one visits you during installation, ordering a managed install costs £92+VAT (if memory not melted) and very few providers offer it.

Yea i meant FTTC. Ah ok, so if fitting it myself is it a simple case of removing the old faceplate and putting the new in its place?

Yes, assuming it is one of the interstitial plates (getting harder to find the older 5 style square ones now)
