Do I need fibre with an internet-enabled TV?

[link to this post]

We're moving house, I need to arrange a new broadband supplier.
We have an internet-enabled TV. Does this mean we definitely need fibre?
Thanks!

If you want to watch the TV streams the TV supports then you will want an Internet connection of sufficient speed usually a minimum of 5 Mbps.

So the answer depends on

a) What is available speed wise where you are moving
b) What you also do in the home other than watch streamed TV on the new TV
c) How much you want to pay

Not necessarily. A reasonable ADSL/ADSL2+ connection of around 4Mbits or more should suffice , a bit more for HD streaming

You don't definitely need fibre, BUT....

If there is more than one person wanting to use the internet at the same time (for example, laptops, tablets etc as well as the tv) then fibre is probably the way to go

Make sure you establish exactly what speed you can get via ADSL at the new property. And I don't mean accepting what the builder/current owner tells you. Find out by asking BT internet what is available at the address/telephone number

Much tv comes down the telephone wire these days. HD quality and, for the future 4k ultra high def needs high speed fibre connections.

Remember you can probably negotiate a good rate for fibre by signing a new contract for 12/18 months which will make fibre just as cheap as ADSL. (Don't simply apply to transfer via your existing supplier especially if you are out of contract)

Remember also if you elect to have ADSL it won't be easy/cheap to change when you find you need faster speeds that fibre will provide

What are you trying to say?

Most providers are happy to let you upgrade within their product range?

Agreed, before we got FTTP we had just renewed our ADSL2+ contract with BT for the normal length required and then a few months later was able to upgrade to FTTP without an issue.

What BT will do is just renew the contract for the required date to start from that date and all done no fuss.

It was the same when upgrading from Infinity 4 to Ultrafast 2, we were just a couple of weeks if that into a new contract and we were able to upgrade without any issues or fines.

But I guess it might depend on the ISP.

I agree

But at a charge for router etc and perhaps not at rates that they offer to new subscribers

Depends on how good you are at haggling
