Slower than normal speed since switching ISP - FTTC TalkTalk

[link to this post]

HI! I hope someone can help me. I recently switched to TalkTalk as my contract with PlusNet had run out.

When I was with PlusNet, I gout around 71/20 which was very good!

Now im with talktalk, i get 56/19. And this is where my query comes in, nothing has changed, except the ISP so im surprised to see this much difference.

I have fitted a new BT Master socket with the new VDSL plate, no difference. BT have been doing work at the green cabinet (it was at max capacity, but that work ended a week ago)

Could one of you experts please take a look at my stats below and advise me if there is an issue - TalkTalk will get an openreach engineer out, but ill have to pay if they "dont find a fault"

What are your views please?

Many thanks in advance!

Here are my stats :

Possibly G.INP was running before and with migration has been switched off, but may switch itself back on in time

Same thing happened to me when I switched from Plusnet to IDNet. Speedtest results dropped from ~65Mb/s to ~56Mb/s. My sync eventually recovered but it took six months. Curiously the trigger for the recovery appeared to be a protracted upload one Saturday. I had a rare line drop mid-afternoon that didn't recover until I power cycled the router.

Over the last year it's actually risen above the PN sync to around 70Mb/s.

Your line has been banded/capped by DLM.
This is almost always due to too many resyncs in a short time period.

The line won't be able to sync above the 60Mb cap until
1. DLM decides the line is stable and removes the banding
or
2. The ISP requests a DLM reset from OpenReach. Some ISP's won't do this.

The issue is banding placed by DLM can get stuck, or take a stupidly long time to remove itself.

This is not the fault of Talktalk. It's entirely down to the OpenReach DLM which no ISP can control.

It's definitely an ECI cabinet, you can tell from the matching up/down power levels which is a bug in the DSLAM firmware.
This means no G.INP or lower SNRM targets to increase speed.

As the line is running fastpath already it is only capable of 66Mb now.
Were you getting 71Mb immediately prior to switching or could it have been weeks/months ago.

A drop from 71Mb to 66Mb is consistent with crosstalk (neighbouring lines causing interference). The more people sign up for FTTC on your cabinet the more speed you are likely to lose to crosstalk.

TL;DR
Capped at 60Mb, should be nearer 65-66MB.
Contact Talktalk or wait it out.

Thanks for the detailed reply - most appreciated. When I had 71 down, that was well over a year ago.

Could it be that this IS the fastest I can get on my line now?

I know that the green box was at capacity - the open reach engineer told me so (they are installing a second green cabinet to cope with the load he said)

Sounds like a very similar situation. Thanks for the reply, looks like this maybe just the way it is and ill have to wait as you did.

Thanks for the reply, im not sure what that is! Should I just wait and eventually it will return to normal?

Looks like won't have been G.INP if the ECI cabinet bit is correct, so most likely cross talk has had an impact over time. This is where lines are interfering with each other and it can be sudden rather than a gradual thing

Cabinet capacity issues usually relate to physical capacity, ie; how many ports there are left for new customers. It's unlikely that the cabinet has reached bandwidth capacity and if it had openreach could just light another fibre. Cabinet capacity is therefore unlikely to be a factor in observed throughput other than that more people means greater likelihood of interference between lines.

No it definitely has a little more top give.
Your line can go 65-66Mb.

Max: Upstream rate = 22409 Kbps, Downstream rate = 66013 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 20000 Kbps, Downstream rate = 59995 Kbps
SNR (dB): 7.6 6.5

Top line is what the line can do, bottom line is current sync.
The sync being 59995 and the SNRM being 1.6dB above the 6dB target leaves me in no doubt your line is capped.

If you resync at some point the sync will stay the same, or only the last digit will change.
Banded 60Mb usually shows as 59999 but it's definitely capped.

Could it be that since going live with Talktalk the line has had multiple drops in a short time period?
You changing modem or rebooting it a few times to try get a higher sync? Work on the house involving the power going on and off?

Unfortunately ISP's give absolutely zero info on DLM to customers.
