Hi i have 2 computers one of them i use as a gaming PC and the other one i use as a home server(old gaming PC) and i am not getting full WAN speed on the home server on https://www.speedtest.net but on the gaming PC i am getting full speed. Both have gigabit LAN adapters and the router is gigabit. The file transfer between the 2 PC's locally happens at 100MB/s.
Local File Transfer
The speed tests where done with nothing running on it only speedtest.net
Gaming PC Speedtest
Server PC Speedtest
Home server specs
Gaming PC specs
what can i do to speed up the home server?

Have you tried doing the speedtest on your server in Safe Mode to rule out a stray Anti Virus, Firewall or even Windows Defender messing things up?
If this makes no difference, have you tried putting the network cable from your games pc in to your server to rule out any hardware faults (like cables, or ports on the router)?

i will try safe mode with networking. I did change the LAN ports but not the wire because the Server PC is not close to the router and LAN file transfer speed is good but i will change the wire and try also. ty

safe mode speedtest
New wire speedtest
This much fluctuation was there before, only on the server pc. and i forgot to mention this is happening both on the on-board LAN card and PCIe LAN card.
i am going to try a few different OS and if that dont work idk maybe my ram is to [censored] or my cpu is to old idk :<
|
|
|
|
Are they the same cards ?
Also do the pc configurations differ massively ?
|
|
|
|
The on-board card is made by Atheros and the PCIe card is by realtek. they give the same result.
Yeah i have posted the PC specs. Server PC has Intel Core2 Quad Processor Q6600 and the gaming PC has i7 3770k

Have you looked at the performance of your server during the speedtests with task manager/performance tab? As it's an older machine I wonder if your GPU or CPU is limiting the performance, web based testers may be using quite a lot compared with the resources for file copying.

omg yes 80-90% cpu usage at 600mbps download and 50% for 900mbps upload.
i guess that solves it need a better cpu. tyvm

2 Gigabit Ethernet Lan Card is best!

if i buy 2gigabit lan card will that take the load of my cpu a lil?
are u saying 2gigbit lan card will get me 1gbps on this cpu?

I doubt it will give you better performance on the current CPU - when doing a web based speedtest, web browsers are pretty CPU/GPU hungry. I don't know what you use the server for: media server, web sites etc but is it actually impacting the performance of that? IMHO if you really do actually need the server to serve to the WAN/internet at your (very impressive I might add) internet speeds I would suggest a newer architecture.

What a load of tosh...
A 2 Gbps Ethernet card will only help if
1. Reduces processing load elsewhere in PC
2. The interface at the other end is also capable of 2 Gbps, and most routers support just 1 Gbps

There isn't even any such thing as a 2gb network card. That is a badly described 1gb card.
There are 1gb, 2.5gb, 5gb and 10gb standards but not 2gb.

ty. i mainly use the server for media and ts3 voice server but i have also hosted a vpn for my friends and IIS for playing around with websites and FTP server.
i am not going to get that card its too expensive and they dont make it anymore . i did buy a 9 euro card that says it has 2000mbps @ full duplex i am omw to get it now but after reading the forum i dont think its going to work. anyway i know what the prob is and i will use it as it is for now. It for personal use anyway. Thank you every one for the help.

I'd suggest you get a genuine Intel 1G NIC. They are good quality and have good drivers.

I am not familiar with those OS. Could it be an RWIN issue as XP used to suffer from or as others have suggested CPU bottleneck?

i dont know wat rwin is. looks like the prob is in the cpu

RWIN is receive window. Used to be a problem in XP with higher speeds and had to be tweaked manually. Windows 8 brought an automatic RWIN which doesnt need tweaking. Not sure what server software does with RWIN.

The Intel Gigabit CT desktop adapter has order code EXPI9301CT, and that's the one you found. It should be fine.
The i210-T1 is a more expensive "server" card, but for home use I doubt you'll notice much difference.
