Difference between fibre BB in Germany and UK?

My wife is getting fibre BB installed in her house in Germany. The provider wanted to rent us the router instead of giving free (as in UK) so we said no, we would buy our own. I have an old Openreach box from when routers didn't handle fibre inputs directly - the box went between wall socket and router and plugged into the WAN socket of the router.
Could I use the same box in Germany - ie do they have the same fibre BB system as us, or is it different in some way that means we have to buy a German router?

I think the Openreach box was a VDSL modem, which needed to connect to a router for all the other functions such as wifi

After some googling; we are getting O2 BB and it appears Germany has deployed VDSL2 so the modem needs to use that - which my old OR VDSL modem probably doesn't. I will look up the model this evening.
Sounds like I will probably have to buy a German VDSL router just to be sure it all works properly

Best to find one that also does VDSL2 Profile 35b the super vectoring version as lots of the VDSL2 in Germany is based on that, i.e. faster than UK VDSL2

The OR modem work with VDSL2 but there are several different profiles . I don't know if either the ECI or Hauwei support them all.

A Zyxel 3925-B10B only goes up as far as profile 17a (and US0, whatever that is) so that won't help you but at least you can tick them off any list.

You need to ascertain if it is delivered over POTS (basic copper two wire) or an ISDN line. Both have been used in Germany.

And a Router will not worry about the actual connection, whereas a Modem or Hub (which will have an inbuiilt modem) will be the interface to the line.

When I read the OP�s question I had a vague recollection of ADSL over ISDN lines in Germany, so is it still a product, and are they likely to have a VDSL variant ?

I think isdn is now dead in Germany, as it will here in a few years

2018 was a target date for DT, although I have not seen any confirmation that it was achieved. So there is a possibility that some pockets still exist and other service providers may still have it in place.
