Is this pole equipment an indicator of FTTP?

[link to this post]

I noticed this has appeared on a pole a few meters down the lane from my house, we're currently not on a cab scheduled for FTTC, supposedly we're to get FTTP, could this be it happening, and if so, how long?

Photo of equipment about 8' up a telegraph pole

Many thanks, Graeme

That is a (not completed yet) FTTP track node . So will eventually be a common joint on an FTTP route.

Looks like it will be used for aerial fibre cabling judging by the cable locking device on its right.

So a possible good omen, but could be months or even years away yet, maybe even part of a bespoke solution with no bearing for you guys at all.

Watching for a CBT (connectorised block terminal) appearing on your copper DP pole would be a much more promising site.

Fingers crossed

There's only two houses fed from that pole, we're on a dead-end lane in a rural location, the only other house is our 80yo neighborhood, I doubt she's ordered any bespoke fibre products - so that's more promising!
Fingers crossed it's not years!

Is there anywhere near with planning permission for a new estate? Or even a single new house.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.
==================================================
If you never think of anything off the wall, you'll never think of anything original.

No, nothing. We're destined for FTTP, the "where and when" website says we're to get fibre as we're not in line for FTTC, but gives no indication of when - hopefully this is a good sign.

Don't get your hopes up like I did. They recently laid overhead fibre all the way down to my unit in a rural area. Rang BT who confirmed that they had indeed laid fibre cables but they would NOT actually connect it to the network back at the TE until ADSL in my area is turned off which is currently planned for 2025! I'll have to put up with snailband until then!

Check https://roadworks.org and set it to display the next 12 months worth of work (Only really 2 weeks max in advance will be added there by then).

Also, you could DM @OpenreachHelp about it (they confirmed FTTP will be rolled out into my area around Jan 2020) but it could be earlier since they've been at the bottom of my road pulling through Fibre for the past month.

You won't see much listed for FTTP unless they need to close off roads to do work or to dig up stuff etc.
Its the same with their Where and when page, FTTP only uses stage 2 (In Scope) and 8 (Ultrafast Accepting orders), so you may see nothing moving when at stage 2 then all of a sudden it jumps to stage 8 where you "should" be able to order.

There's a few of them dangling off poles in my area of Birmingham which is getting FTTP. Most of the poles locally have the fibre connections in place (mine hopefully soon as they've just updated the ducting).

Equipment has had further work

Looking good.. would be interested in knowing how long it typically takes before I can order and how long activation would take?

Hi,

We have one of these on a pole nearby with a CBT above it too on the outskirts of a group of 35 houses. 3 houses close to it can already get FTTP. The other houses are all within 400m of it.

In theory if Openreach ever extended FTTP to the remaining 35 houses would they only have to cable from that 'track node' to build out more CBT's on to the remaining poles to serve the other houses or could it still involve running cable back to the nearest aggregation node? Or impossible to say?

Just wondering how that black dome allows their network to be expanded? Or have I misunderstood and it doesn't act as a splitter of any kind?

Cheers

Zarjaz has worked on FTTP longer than me but I think that splitter can serve 32 customers. So presumably they can just keep building our CBTs from it until they reach that limit.

But alas, I may have forgotten that bit of the training!

Whilst impossible to say for your specific question.

The black dome will have XX amount of fibres in a bundle to it, from they might all just be spliced straight though to a similar bundle going on ... or maybe it drops off 4/8/12 to feed a CBT somewhere.

Or maybe these fibres sit before a splitter node .... impossible to tell.

We have had items identical to those you have posted in place with Fibre linking them for the last 12 months. Currently there are no plans to connect to the Fibre spine as its deemed too costly by the local Superfast team after OR identified a dramatic increase in their costs.

Five Months..!!!! I can now order FTTP! I'm so excited laugh

Currently with A&A they don't offer anything faster than 160Mb , i'm itching to order 500Mb just because I can..

... what ISP would people recommend - quite used to the controls that A&A provide.. and the excellent customer service. have someone answer the phone that knows what they're on about (or more than me at least) without having to go through some annoying IVR or waiting in a queue.. is quite refreshing!

Cerberus 500 Mb offering is > £150/m with a £600 install fee. Youre better off waiting for the revised cheaper 500 Mb & 1000 Mbs tiers to be released by Openreach very shortly (albeit with reduced upload speeds). They should start selling these to CPs by the end of the year.

I think the 330/50 offering from Cerberus is *much* better value (£71.50+VAT). You're only talking about a 50% increase in download speed - although the 165M upload speed is tempting.

Otherwise, I think if you go 160/30 with A&A you'll still be very happy. Many sites you talk to on the Internet struggle to serve data to individual users faster than 200Mbps anyway.

It's in!! Ceberus 300/50 (or is it 330?)

... Yesterday the engineer installed it, we were immediately getting around 290-300Mb very pleased..!

But today we've struggled to get to 50Mb mostly around 40Mb.. Is that to be expected?

It depends: you need to say in detail how you're measuring.

Is your client wired into the router, or on wireless? You should be wired. Is your client device running anything else? Check your CPU utilisation during the test.

If it's speedtest.net, try selecting a different UK test endpoint. I see different performance to different speedtest.net endpoints - and overall limited to about 200Mbps since my laptop's CPU utilisation goes up to 100% (probably due to flash and/or SSL and/or animated adverts on speedtest.net). But I get full 300Mbps when testing using iperf3 to a remote host I control.

If you're timing a download of a large file, then beware many remote sites fail to have enough bandwidth to fill 300Mbps to a single client. Also, the further the site is away in terms of round-trip time, the more sensitive it is to packet loss limiting the throughput to that site.

Try to repeat the identical test at different times of day. If you can point to a particular time when throughput is poor, then that could point to congestion in the SVLAN on the backhaul link from the exchange to Cerberus (which is shared with other users). If so, Cerberus should be able to move you onto a different SVLAN.

I think you need to talk to Cerberus, let them help you with your testing methodology, and they'll be able to narrow down the issue.

Agreed, I had the same issue with BT when I first got FTTP where our speed was 315Mbps on install day and then a few days later it dropped from 312Mbps to 45Mbps, BT said its not an issue until it falls below 40Mbps.

I wasn't happy with that response so I make a complaint and I assumed they moved me due to after the drop in connection and reconnect I have never dropped below 280Mbps at any time of the day.

So by speaking to the ISP can and does help, so no harm in trying, just be firm but polite.

I've been away this weekend so didn't have a chance to test anything.. this morning I've tested with my laptop connected at 5Ghz and the speeds were 280Mbps..

But testing on an Android (OnePlus 6) still connecting at 5Ghz was still only giving me ~45Mb which made me think!
.. The only change made since the install has been updating the SSID to be the same as the old router and making 5Ghz & 2.5Ghz use the same SSID, maybe that was confusing the mobile device and it couldn't transfer at full speed.
Since changing back to different SSIDs for each the two bands the Android devices are now testing at full speed.

Is that all to be expected.. quick google didn't come up with any suggestions not to put them on the same SSID?

Cheers,
Ears.

Some android devices may pick the 2.4ghz frequency instead of the 5ghz. Check your router's 2.4ghz max speed.

Best to have separate SSID for 2.4 and 5GHz so you can force a device to use the faster 5GHz band where possible.

Definately works on 5Ghz..
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15692324713...

But the Android phone was showing as connected at 5Ghz but was giving 2.5Ghz speed.

(this is the laptop connecting to the, now separately named 2.5G, access point..
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15692328503...

The plan is to switch over to Unify throught the house and office now we've got decent internet..

so hopefully this will all go away.

That should work well.

Note: on my Unifi AC Lites I was getting only about 200Mbps throughput. The problem was that the radio was defaulting to 40MHz channels (VHT40). After changing to VHT80 in the controller, wireless throughput is now >400Mbps to a local iperf3 server.

I feel like I am still in the stone age, with my 7Mbs down and 0.7Mbs up speeds for the last 5 years. However, next Monday I am cooking on gas with my new blazing FTTC BT Superfast 50Mbs service. I can feel my hair blowing in the wind already...Happy days, I hope......

For those who may not know, BT are paying my early exit fee with TalkTalk with still had a year to run.
