Sync vs Attainable rate

[link to this post]

Quick question - what's the difference between the sync rate and the attainable rate with a DSL connection?

Obviously sync rate is the one I actually get, but the difference between the two is 10Mbs:
Sync (kbps) 67241
Attainable rate (kbps) 77260

It's mildly irritating, but I wondered what each value was.

Sync rate is what you are currently connected at.
Available rate is the maximum possible rate your line could manage this very moment.

The gap between the two is for a variety reasons but is typically one or more of the following:

* Breathing space. Line conditions vary throughout the day so if you connected at the attainable rate the connection would likely drop at some point when conditions changed and it could no longer be sustained.
* Package choice. You or your provider may be limiting your speed. Eg; You might not have subscribed to the top package or you're so close to the DSL head-end that your line supports faster speeds than the provider sells.
* The DSL management system is limiting your speed because of prior observed events that it thinks/knows would cause a disconnect if it let you connect higher.

In most cases Interleaving/INP exaggerates the attainable, that's why you see an attainable so much higher than the actual sync rate.

Interleaving does lower the actual and increase attainable, as you say, and the INP parameters change, but G.INP if activated wipes out those changes as well as zeroising the delay: parameter.

Of course, but being a grammar pedant I considered the "if activated" covered that tongue wink. I was more concerned about the poster's indeterminant use of INP in what I replied to.
