G.fast pod disappeared

[link to this post]

I live in the east of Norwich, and my road got a g.fast pod installed about 2 months ago.
Ive been checking the BT checker regularly to see when it would be active, but today Ive noticed the pod has been completely removed!

Has this happened to anyone else? If so, do you know what the reason was?

Thanks

They have considerably scaled back their G.Fast plans in favour of FTTP.

I've only seen 1 other G.Fast pod removed.
OpenReach didn't give a reason why it was removed, simply replying that there are no plans to deploy G.Fast from that cabinet.

I would guess that any enquiry you made about it would get a similar response.

Im hoping my road will have FTTP installed instead, but I guess you never know with Openreach.
It would make sense though as its quite a long road.

Hi

Do you mean the checker is no longer showing G.Fast stats, or that the actual physical pod has been taken away?

The checker was never showing g.fast stats for some reason.
The physical pod has gone from the cabinet.

Openreach replaced our cabinet for a new one before putting the pod on as well.
Surely they wouldnt replace the cabinet for nothing?

What does the checker show for your FTTC estimates? If those aren't high enough to suggest G.Fast would be a benefit to you it wouldn't show G.Fast.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

If you never think of anything off the wall, you'll never think of anything original.

It shows 80-66.1 down and 20-19 up
I currently get speeds of about 67Mbps.

Should have been good enough. Maybe the other suggestion, that FTTP may come instead, is a possibility.

Hope Openreach will do the same removed g.fast pod from my cabinet 8 sooner or later for the better. Roll on FTTP. I do believe there will be nationwide FTTP by 2025 for all of us in UK.

Maybe no ones order g.fast! So, they removed it off

I kept checking for availability of g.fast on the BT site but it never showed, so must be some other reason.

Not every houses show up G.fast my house is showing G.fast but four houses down by mine get no G.fast but a house next to it got G.fast. Depend on telephone line route.

Interesting. Which cabinet on which exchange if you don't mind my asking?

They could certainly remove pods that haven't been made live yet. They can't do so for those that have been enabled as far as I know - if G.fast is active it will remain so.

Is there any FTTP nearby? Norwich does have a few bits here and there, however there's nothing to indicate a larger FTTP rollout any time soon.

The usual indicators would show as a bunch of roadworks to unblock ducts, replace or put in new poles, etc.

Building better networks, not just faster ones.

Any resemblance between the posts of this account and Ignitionnet are entirely intentional. R Kelly rather killed the connotations of the old one.

Its cabinet 29 on THORPE exchange.

There is some FTTP about a mile up the road on a new housing development.

That actually looks like exactly the kind of area you'd build FTTP for.

Fingers crossed for you guys that's the case.

Oh great smile I hope so!
We had to suffer with up to 3Mbps for years so it would be nice to be ahead for a change!

I just checked your area with post code: NR13 5BW served by cabinet 29 and it say on openreach checker:

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)

Technology that supports speeds up to 1Gbps

We dont have plans to upgrade your area yet. Tell us youre interested and well update you when things change.

Out of interest, how do you find the locations of the cabinets?

Just to mention neither the Fibre First microsite or that checker are reliable. OR are working on the Morley, Leeds exchange despite it being listed on neither.

Hi

Ah I see, well that's certainly definite then, no G.Fast for you or anyone else on that cabinet.

They've recently changed the minimum speed they will consider G.Fast to be worthwhile upgrading to, I don't know the geography of where you are or the surrounding area, but perhaps so few people are going to benefit due to line length/line quality they've just recovered the asset and moved it elsewhere.

Unfortunately in most cases, we will never know why Openreach do certain things. Maybe FTTP is on its way imminently to your area, maybe not.

They have considerably scaled back their G.Fast plans

Looking at the November 2018 announcement of 81 locations to be built "over the next 9 months", very few seem to have any live service. It's a stark contrast to the 59 locations on the June 2018 list.

Whereas my exchange was never on any list I've seen but has just gone live. I'm the first sub on my cabinet

Don't be so sure. I get a full 80/20 out of my FTTC connection. always have. The attainable is somewhat higher. Finally after 10 months G.fast went live on the cabinet. I cannot get it however...

I would say there's a very high chance of Norwich being in OR's FTTP plans as it has nearly total coverage by Virgin Media, and given that they have just upped the ante by announcing 1Gps for all customers, OR will be keen to not get left behind. I'm moving to NR7 very shortly, and the best speed OR can offer me is 10 to 18Mps on FTTC, which is extremely poor for a city urban area these days.

What speed do you currently get in Great Yarmouth , where VM couldnt be persuaded to dig a few more feet to provide you service ?

It's make no different as my area is full of virgin media 100% coverage since telewest NTL cable. But, Openreach still rolling out more G.fast pods in Telford but it appear it stopped doing it now for some reason. Cabinet 1, 6 & 7 are supposed to fitted G.fast pods but they never bother to installed it. Maybe they start to plan FTTP next.

I don't know if OR will removed G.fast on my cabinet 8 if no ones still not ordering it because the fibre cabinet is sitting next to virgin media cabinet there.

If, they did removed it off for some reason, then more likely it will be FTTP cos of Virgin Media 1Gbps soon.
