FTTC/FTTP

[link to this post]

I moved in to a new house last month and our FTTC hasn't been as good as was expected - the downstream has been below the handback threshold (although the threshold has now reduced) and the upstream has been about 2Mb compare to a predicted 8 to 10Mb.

It hasn't been harming us too much so I hadn't got around to doing anything.

Yesterday I had to reset the TP-Link wireless extender and wondered if there were any deals going for the BT wifi discs. I logged in and was pleasantly surprised that there was a deal - but not for the discs. Turns out FTTP is apparently available to our estate, it wasn't available last month and TBB doesn't even have it listed as available.

There have been vans around the area off and on for a few weeks but seeing BT vans is hardly unusual - especially as there is another estate down the road still being built that has had FTTP for a couple of years. But, it appears they were preparing us for fibre.

There has been no announcement, no leaflets, no emails, nothing to say FTTP is available. I am pretty sure it isn't BDUK (as we had "superfast" speeds anyway) or Fibre First so it looks like we are just part of BT's standard programme - maybe because there is FTTP quarter of a mile up the road they decided to extend it to another reasonably new estate (house is 3 years old) or maybe BT just felt generous...

Anyway, hopefully it will be installed on 11 October and I will be able to forget all about the FTTC issues we have any not bother to spend loads of time on the phone with support.

I hope no-one that can't get decent connections takes offence at this post, I know there are many that can't get anything useful.

PM postcode and can look and add to the stats.

If you had superfast speeds you would not be seeing predicted speeds of 8 to 10 Mbps but something in the 24 to 40 Mbps. So probably BDUK intervention

Having FTTC available does not automatically qualify you as superfast, this is something of an internet myth that exists.

Not such a huge surprise to some Ian, it really is really rolled out at quite a remarkable rate.

Good luck, hope it all goes smoothly.

Time to put a little thought into whats going where. Those discs are jolly good too.

Good luck to ian72, but in non national parks, the fibre install pace has certainly picked up. As shown by the grey dots on the tbb labs maps. I'm just waiting for our to be done. I've now been told multiple dates, and I'm just excepting it will arrive at some point. At least the OR website is showing fttp is coming (and fttc - even though the cab is fttc enabled)..

Ian appears to be saying 2 upstream compared to 8-10 upstream?
But as you say 'superfast' and FTTC are in no way the same thing as our local DBUK team found out with my line.

Mmm yes, but 2 Mbps upstream sounds very low, suggesting download in the 15 Mbps region. Postcode will help me figure out if this is one of those Ofcom count as superfast and/or we do too.

The wholesale checker is not infallible, just like our checker is not infallible, difference is takes me 24 hours (less often) to look at and fix quirks when they do show up e.g. road route to a postcode is 3 or 4 times the expected distance due to winding route taken and we can take this into account.

Thanks have PMd the postcode.

For the speed it is our upstream that was predicted as 8 to 10, not downstream - downstream was predicted as 60Mbs with a handback threshold of 32 but in reality has never quite met the 32. The houses phone wiring was a bit of a dogs dinner when I moved in as well - master socket in a stupid position in the hallway and had a chain of other sockets to where previous owners had their router in a bedroom. I removed most of the extensions but even in the master socket with all extensions disconnected the connection is nowhere near what it should be according to checkers - but with FTTP coming I am not inclined to try and fight to get it sorted.

So, it isn't BDUK as it is already superfast as is pretty much every other property in the area.

Thanks. They are supposed to be doing external work this week so hopefully will see some fibre cable turn up. Might well still consider the discs at a later stage once the broadband is upgraded but possible a new router will work better with the TP-Link wifi extender - but if it doesn't then I will look to new options.

I really wasn't expecting FTTP in the near future - I was resigned to waiting at least 5 years so a happy surprise yesterday. We are also just on the edge of an area that Cityfibre has announced and it was a little annoying that it didn't quite stretch (we are just in the next district). But, BT hopefully will come up trumps - if it had just been my choice I would have moved to a new estate just down the road that already had FTTP but the wife fell in love with our new house (and with FTTP coming we can both be happy wink)

We were predicting some premises that have flipped as down in the 25 Mbps area, so maybe about bringing them to well over 30, or as someone suggested some relatively recent estates are seeing FTTP retro fitted under commercial umbrella. Have in the last month started to see more like this, and have been randomly looking at some old 2015/2016 areas, though yours is different in that you had VDSL2 available.

Or its just the roll of a dice or a dart thrown at a map one the wall of the office.

Will be in checker along with a couple of thousand other premises before 1st October.
