Overhead Fibre Cables Next To House On ADSL

A close relative at Teversal near Chesterfield (NG17 3JE) who at the present time on very slow ADSL & getting 5 meg or so tops, often less - He has noticed at the end of their drive almost lines & signs on poles saying overhead fibre lines. There are new build houses being built at this time not far away but they are wondering is there any way they can attain fibre & they have no chance of hybrid as too far from any cabinet. I�m well out of the loop now but am really asking for any advice regarding their situation - Thanks

The presence of those fibre lines doesn't really mean anything. We are in the same situation, in our case the fibre was installed a year ago to provide a leased line to a nearby business but there is no chance of a domestic FTTP installation (on demand is still quoting in excess of £40k). In fact Gigaclear are due to come to us (just been put back to 2021 from 2019) and when they come it will be via a completely different route.

From my past reading I was thinking around similar lines, thanks for that though. Might be worth investigating if anyone is installing FTTP though & dates if even they exist. Thanks for your reply. Paul

Even if they are installing OpenReach FTTP down the road and that's what the passing fibre cable is, it still doesn't help.

The fibre cable cannot just be broken in to and additional properties fed from it.

It depends on whether there are splitters or such in place. We have fibre cabling recently run past our property to give a village further down the road access to fast services as they do not have FTTC (sub 2mb DSL), there's a track joint on the pole we're fed from, so I'd suspect that we will gain access from this at some point in the future. It would be pretty stupid if Openreach had not planned for this!

Is this example all overhead cabling? There could be equipment in underground chambers if the cable goes under ground. That's also the case near me (seen engineers splicing cables at these points).

The problem is we and in your case, you, will have no idea as to how many fibres are there and how many OLTs have been commissioned for that area. So yes in theory it could be used, it may on the other hand it may not.

Even blowing new cable may be easier than before but even that isn't guaranteed.

We (well others who know more than me on this) simply can't tell you, especially given how Pon works. Only OR can do that - and even then you can get two answers from them ..

Underground and overhead.

Never known them to install equipment for the properties they are passing (to install FTTP at a later date) while on route to another FTTP build.
Fibre joints yes, obviously. Splitters no.

Happy to be educated on changes to this but they haven't done so in the past.
