FTTP to be or not to be....

[link to this post]

I'm a bit confused about what's going on here.
1 cabinet village, got fttc 2015 at 65Mbps, moved house August 2019 same village 0.5 miles up road & fttc is unreliable at 10mbps & 0.2Mbps up really stuttery & slow, so cancelled line.

Noticed that a load of FTTP gear is on our poles with fibre coiled up waiting to be connected to the outside world.

Spoke to council broadband people & they say should be done by March 2020, spoke to Openreach & they are adamant 2021. I'm guessing/hoping council are right obviously & thinking more likely with every other pole with connectors on it already but who knows....

If its a council funding project (e.g. BDUK) to deliver your FTTP then find out what phase you're in and the target date for completion of that phase. There have been lots of reports that BDUK projects have been started and never finished due to unforeseen issues, this may not be that extreme but may be badly delayed.

If this is the first bit of FTTP in the area, then a longer lead time likely.

If already some FTTP in exchange area a shorter lead time is more likely.

A lot depends on the area itself and which exchange is the fibre head end and what else is going on elsewhere locally, e.g. waiting on a brand new fibre spine or new headend kit as old one is full, or the classic all built apart from one bit that needs a road closure that is some months away.

When FTTP was deployed to our area nobody seemed to know what was going on, it turned out to be BDUK funded, it was only when I contacted the 'old' BDUK council officer that we unearthed the facts. I even got an email from the 'new' council officer saying it wasn't FTTP and I had to send him photo's of the install

For many of the council people they have been moved to the project from other roles, or are doing it part time, so don't have the exposure to all the nuances or experience to know when something does not look right.

Or are tired of the whole thing through managing the social media - which in the early days of BDUK projects saw a lot of attacking going on.

As you say some BDUK council officers are very much on the ball and are a wealth of knowledge about what broadband work is going on in the area. Some but sadly not all councils also provide online maps that are also very helpful.
