This happened when getting connected to fibre (FTTC)

My very rural patch has been one of the very last to get any kind of faster broadband. I knew it was on the way because I've kept in touch with the very helpful Steve Brooks at OnLincolnshire. The improved service was expected in December or January and we had the new fibre cabinet installed a month ago. Then, presumably, more work needed to be done inside and outside the cabinet.

Here's what happened in the last 3 weeks.

1. We heard about the fibre (FTTC) connection being available by chance, living in the sticks I wonder how many other people don't realise when they can upgrade? As has been said in other places, watch out for new cabinets and roadworks in funny places.

2. It took more than 2 weeks to get connected with Plusnet - that's normal for all ISPs I understand.

3. It cost only 25p / week to go from 2.1mbps to a promised 39mbps.

4. Despite being told that the old ADSL modem would continue working when the switch-over happened, it didn't. In the storms I thought I'd suffered an outage. My ADSL modem was a few years old but Plusnet didn't check this and, to be fair, it might have been caused by something else. Nearby neighbours signed up to other ISPs had no problem.

5. Because my ADSL service stopped working, or perhaps because it was a Saturday, I didn't get the promised email to tell me I could swap out the modem/router to the new VDSL version that Plusnet had already sent out. I'd been told not to swap modems until I'd received the email.

6. Phoning Tech Support to report the 'outage' (v quick to get through to nowadays) they could see it was because the fibre service had been connected - on a Saturday? - and though the modem/router didn't immediately or automatically initialise the TS chap sorted it immediately. With a fibre service they can see more and do more than they could with the old copper-based service.

7. The guaranteed 39mbps service started out at 17 and rose after an hour or so to 25.

8. 24 hours later we're back to anything between 8 and 15. I was told it would need some days to synchronise properly but I wasn't expecting a yo-yo effect.

I'll update in a day or three but, as I've come to expect with anything computer related (eg W7 to W10), I don't expect a perfectly smooth ride.
