New FTTP install, what to expect

[link to this post]

I am moving soon to a house where the BT DSL CHECKER says

Single Dwelling Unit Residential OH Feed with no anticipated issues.
FTTP is available and a new ONT may be ordered

I will probably go with BT and get ultrafast 250

What should I expect for the installation?

What exactly is an ONT?

Does the fibre come directly into my house into the ONT?

Does the BT supplied router connect to the ONT?

Can I use my existing ASUS Wifi6 router instead of the BT one?

I have some of the answers ...

Optical Network Termination.

The fibre will be brought to an external termination point, then a fibre run from the ONT to the external feed, and spliced through.

The router then connects to the ONT via an ethernet cable.

Think carefully about where you want the ONT to be. From an installation point of view, an outside wall, with power supplies near by.

Just to also add, it might be that the FTTP is already installed by the current owner, in which case the ONT will already be there. If this is the case ordering and getting connected will be pretty quick and no engineer visit is required and you just plug your router (or supplied router) into the ONT then sign in using the credentials supplied to you by whoever you order from.

You can get FTTP without a phone service and this will usually work out a bit cheaper, so you are just getting data.

Good luck with the move.

Thx
BT dont seem to have an option of ordering without a phone line (presumably a VOIP one).

They don't sell broadband without voice.

The voice service will likely be VOIP which requires the telephone handset to be connected to the new BT Smart hub's telephone(ATA) port.

You can use your existing router instead of the BT Smart Hub but will likely lose access to the VOIP line.

Taking a broadband service without voice is more likely to be pennies cheaper, not pounds cheaper.
The difference in price are likely to be tiny.

Thank you
Why is Zen internet £70pcm for the same tier that BT ultrafast 250 is for much less?
Does it matter that much who I go with given its FTTP?

That is likely due to some 'deal' that BT Consumer has that enables them to sell the 330 tier at near the price BT Wholesale charge. Nobody is anywhere close to the price BT charges for the 330 tier.

If you can wait a few weeks to order, Sky are going to start selling FTTP very very soon and TalkTalk will hopefully be not long away given the special terms Openreach are running on the 500/1Gb tiers are probably akin to what they were trying to negotiate. Once TalkTalk launch as well it means the other ISP's will have another back haul option which should lower their costs.

Depends whether things like a static IP address or customer service are important to you.

Zen is currently showing £59.99 for 300/50 FTTP, but with a £55 setup fee and 18 month contract. If you go with BT, and time your order right, you can often get a prepaid Mastercard cashback of £130 or thereabouts.
