For people currently on the 900:110 upwards packages...

[link to this post]

I am just asking people that are currently live on the 900:110 upwards packages to see what ISP, Package, Router, Location and the actual Speed you are receiving.

Hopefully this will help people in the future choose the right hardware etc to fit the ISP and the speed of the package chosen.

So here goes...

ISP: BT
Package: Full Fibre 900 + FVA (900Mbit, 110Mbit)
Router Using: MikroTik Tik RB4011iGS+RM (CPU at 25% load when using full connection)
Location: London (about 5.4km / 3.3 miles from Telehouse Docklands)
Speed Received: 880 - 890 Mbps.

I currently also have a SamKnows White Box inline, so that may or may not impact the speed due to hardware limitations, when I get some time I will temporary remove it from the chain and see if it changes.

I also have the new Smart Hub 2 (not sure on the revision) so at some point later on I will try that with and without the White Box inline.

I also have a few Switches setup here to reduce the required cables, this is also due to be upgraded.
I might use the 10Gbit ports to link the Switches, so new cable may needed to be installed for those.

Paul

ISP: Cerberus Networks
Package: 900/110
Router Using: FireBrick 2900
Location: Eastbourne
Speed Received: Router specification limited me to about 500-550Mbps downstream (up to 750Mbps spec)

I will eventually switch to the EdgeRouter Pro 8 which I have spare.

ISP: BT
Package: Fibre 900
Live since: About an hour ago...
Router Using: Linksys Velop AC2200 connected to Openreach ONT (no Smart Hub)
Location: East London
Speed Received: 880 Mbps - 1 Gbps down, 100-120 Mbps up. Fast.com usually reads fastest.

Only just activated so will give it time to settle but so far so good.

Further findings:

The speeds have stabilised at a consistent 900/110 Mbps on a wired connection, so very pleased with that.

The Velop Wi-Fi system is a few years old now and was a consumer-oriented device to start with. It's not designed for gigabit applications. Nonetheless it holds its own, consistently delivering the 900/110 over its ethernet port, and up to 550 Mbps over its Wi-Fi connection. It does not support Wi-Fi 6.

Interestingly it has a built-in speed check, based upon speedtest.net, that runs on-device. It caps out at around 550 Mbps down - which seems to be a limitation of either the test or the hardware.

Sadly I'm in an incredibly Wi-Fi congested environment, so most of time time the real world speeds are far lower. The main cause of the interference is that I live in an apartment building where everyone uses BT (it's FTTP only and BT is still the most popular big-box ISP for that), and so there are up to ten routers clogging up the spectrum on each floor of the building.

The Smart Hub 2 arrived today, so I thought I would give that a go.

It performs worse than the Velop in every respect and still has the glitch where the upload speed is capped at 50 Mbps. So that's going straight back into its box.

Next upgrade will be Wi-Fi 6, but most of my devices don't support that yet anyway.

Nice, I did look at the Ubiquiti router products, but they were a bit pricy compared to MikroTik Tik RB4011iGS+RM which I ended up getting, I did buy the UniFi nanoHD Access Point which is rather nice.

I never trust what fast.com says, one test said I was getting 860Mbit down and 290Mbit up and then another said I was getting 1.35Gbit down and 520Mbit up, so you cannot trust that site for speed tests.

I would use speedtest.net (pick a server closest to you) and TBB Tests due to they are consistent and mostly both match up with each other, well they have been for me.

I am just using the default config on my router, I had to enable IPv6 on it and then also add all the firewall filter rules for that.

Still not tested the Smart Hub 2 as yet due to I was waiting until BT renews the IP.

Nice, would be nice to see what you get on that other router when you do change them over.

Nice on your speeds smile
I would take what fast.net says you are getting, its returning incorrect speeds, it just told me I am on about 1.53Gbit down and 1.2Gbit up (I [censored] wish LOL)

But the TBB speed result are very nice smile

I made a few changes to the FireBrick configuration, mainly to see if it might improve anything, and I was able to get a better result. Depending on the remote server, I'm able to now get between approximately 600 to 700 megabits downstream on a multithreaded speed test without the latency spiking either. I won't rush to switch to the EdgeRouter as that's still a superb speed and not far from the package limit, but it will likely happen eventually. The FireBrick isn't shaping the downsteam, while the upstream is being shaped at approximately 87%.

https://www.speedtest.net/result/9375468743.png has been my best result so far.
