FTTC poor for line length - am I expecting too much?

[link to this post]

I look after IT for a small church / charity and after several months of the line being banded to 49Mb. I have reported a low speed fault to my ISP (Plusnet) who after the usual checks from the NTE test socket arranged for a visit by Openreach who confirmed that the pair was good and reset DLM to remove banding. Sync speed went up to 55Mb which is near the Minimum Guaranteed Speed of 53.5Mb. Following a period of errors yesterday the DLM has intervened and my sync speed is down to 48Mb. I am on an ECI cab.The sync speeds also dropped last year when Openreach moved Cab 10 across the road and didn't fully recover post move.

Should I expect a higher sync speed? As I am nearing the end of my current contract would another ISP take over the service and progress what seems to be an underlying fault?

Probably not. If you've already had an engineer visit then the speed is likely as good as it's going to get.

The estimates from the wholesale checker are just that - estimates - from a data model which is an imperfect representation of the real world. Interference can come from sources that Openreach don't control. Also, I note you're getting the full upstream speed.

The only thing I can suggest is trying a modem/router with a chipset from a different vendor. It may play better with the ECI cabinet - or it may not.

Thanks.

Any recommendations for modems or routers with modem mode that are suited to ECI cabs?

That suggests the Draytek Vigor 130, but it'll set you back about £80, so maybe someone on an ECI cabinet who has direct experience of this can comment before you commit the cash.

(I have the Vigor 130, and it's a solid piece of kit, but on a Huawei cabinet)

Had a 130 for a while, and it wasn't until i redid my network and installed a 2862 that i realised that it was throttle sync speed considerably.

Draytek 2862.

Are you on an ECI or a Huawei cabinet though?
