New install next week - ONT location?

[link to this post]

Hi All

I am due to have BT Full Fibre 100 installed on Tuesday, My property is about 5 years old. I am hoping to tap into your expertise as I am not entirely sure what to expect. My wife really does not want any external wires and absolute minimal change.

My master socket is located inside the hall (I have a business and residential line) to the rear in the picture

The CSP I can see is situated outside wall.

https://ibb.co/NCPfKTH

I am not sure how the wiring goes internally to the hall master socket whether it is underground or up and over on the floorboards above. Ideally the ONT would be installed where the master socket is.

However will have I to be prepared for the ONT to be situated somewhere else?

Many thanks!

I suspect the existing copper cable gets from where it enters the house to the existing sockets behind plasterboard and floorboards. Openreach wont be lifting floorboards so unless there is conduit and a draw rope its likely to be surface mounted to where you want it located. remember wherever you want the ONT located make sure there are a couple of spare power sockets, one for the ONT and one for the routers.

The router can be located some distance from the ONT of course. Limited by length of Ethernet cable you have, i.e. a 5 or 10m run that you run yourself to get the router into best wireless location is perfectly possible. Pending of course reviews from who so ever is in charge of decor.

There is no need to locate the router next to the ONT IF you are prepared to run some cat5 (or higher) cable from the ONT to your router if you want to place it elsewhere. I found that flat or thin white ethernet cable has a quite high WAF if hidden under carpet or even stuck to skirting board. Amazon and Aliexpress were my friends.

The OR engineer I has was quite happy to run fibre a reasonable distance from where it entered the house, but I strongly suggest you have a clear idea of both plan a and plan b (and plan c) before he/she arrives

EDIT - this was one of the cables I used. Less than £10 for 10m - not exactly bank-breaking

Was basing my reply on the fact the OP said the following

'My wife really does not want any external wires and absolute minimal change.'

This is how my install was done in 2017. The second photo shows where the fibre enters my home and from there its around a 5m ezy bend cable run to the ONT, located next to the master socket. Fibre cabling runs over skirting board and over door frame, and is fairly discreet.

We got our engineer to run the fibre through a gap between the doorstep and front door to the other side of the doorway and then through the brick. We then just had the ont fitted on the internal wall there. looking at your setup wonder if it’s an option for you to get the fibre to the other side of the doorway and then maybe they could run the internal fibre along the skirting to where you want the ont located.

Not sure what's on the RHS of your front door inside wall.
If BT were to come out of there duct with the fibre along the underside of your wooden door step, then up the outside wall for a small distance and mount the CSP (Customer Splice Point) they will have to drill a small hole in the outside wall to inside and maybe mount your ONT (optical Network Terminator) near your other equipment.

Looks like you could mount another 13 Amp mains socket above the one that's there now.
It's not a good idea to use any '13Amp plug adapters' !.

Thanks all for the feedback much appreciated. I suspect now as per an earlier comment the internal wiring to the master socket will not be viable to pull through cable to allow the ONT to be sited where the router currently is.

Putting cable internally from the CSP to the rear of the hall will have to go over a cloakroom door to get to the existing location so that will aesthetically be "not allowed" by mrsferret. Also there is no space or power to the front to mount wall, it has to go to the master socket.

I have come up with a compromise that mrsferret is happy with. If they cannot put the ONT where the master socket is, will ask for cable to be put along the front of the house, round the corner to the rear. The chimney stack is a little detour but otherwise hopefully dooable?

https://ibb.co/pW9pYP3 (front with CSP and cable to go to the left and round the corner)

https://ibb.co/wd3D1W0 (rear to my chalked BT "X" for them)

By doing this, they would then put the ONT where my BT 4K TV box is behind that wall, so no more powerline adaptors. I hope the copper line can be left by the master socket where it is now for voice. That on many levels would be superior and eliminate the 13 amp extension from the hall!

Do you think this a goer?

Cheers!

My ADSL line came through a wall to an NTE5 in a cupboard under some stairs, nowhere near a 13A socket.

Fibre was run from the exit of the underground conduit with the copper in it round the outside of the house and through a different wall with the ONT placed next to a 13A socket behind a TV. The NTE5 is still where it was for voice.

This sounds to be what you're looking to have happen so it can be done.
