Interesting new street cabinet installed nearby

[link to this post]

Could anyone advise what this new piece of equipment is?

It's recently appeared nearby and has a triple underground chamber in front of it.

My exchange is not listed as FTTP or part of any known roll out of FTTP services.

It doesn't appear to be Openreach.

Is there any lettering on the chamber covers?

Are there any nearby tall towers/masts?

Any significant roadworks?

Any recent planning permissions for the postcode on the local council website?

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, sites and mail hosting - Tsohost & Ionos.
Connection - Three B311 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up. 1+ 8 Pro max 80Mbps down, 24Mbps up.

Hey Roberto,

Yes the markings on the cabinet and street chamber are OFNL, but I think the O has an i in the middle of it.

The labels state the company is Intergrated Fibre Networks Limited.

There are no mobile phone masts nears this street box, there is going to be a new housing estate up the road that is currently going through some planning processes, but that would an Openreach build as the developer is a Openreach exclusive partner.

It's on a junction of a road, but it's the only one in the village that I've seen.

Appears to be IFNL/OFNL (they changed their name). https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2018/08/new-bu...

They have a checker you can try:
https://www.ofnl.co.uk/residents-businesses/postcode...

I guess OSCP is "optical secondary connection point", and you have the laser symbol too confirming it's fibre.

INFL have partnered up with one the the local housing associations in my area to provide fibre services to their new developments. I'm not sure what deal they got which would be better that Openreach apart from being able to offer Sky Q on the network via one of their resellers.

From IFNL contractor docs, it appears to be "On Site Convergence Point". For what it's worth. smile

"OSCP Definition: The ‘On Site Convergence Point’ (‘OSCP’) is the name assigned to the building, street side cabinet or room, together with the collection of equipment placed within it, which is required to enable provision of fibre services to your site."

With Sky over the fibre, it is easier for covenants for owners to NOT allowed satellite dishes and TV aerials on the outside of properties.

In terms of deal, as the OFNL locations are usually lock outs for Openreach and Virgin Media the deal might have been better than free.

Green Street Cabinet
One of those turned up near me as well a couple of months ago. Accompanied by roadworks described as 'laying Ethernet cable' or somesuch. Mine is not in a rural area so I wondered if someone had ordered FTTPoD.

The one I've seen is in front of the bushes. There is a small housing estate being built south of that road (next to the A422) but I don't think it can be more than a dozen houses. Being built on the rest of the floodplain as well. I /knew/ that would happen eventually.

That won't be it, because Openreach FTTP (and FTTPoD) don't use any cabinets at all. Splitters are either in underground chambers or on top of poles.

I don't see any cabinet there, except for the FTTC cabinet near the roundabout - is that it, or is there a new one? Does the new cabinet you've seen have any labelling on it?

You won't. I provided that link just to give an idea of location. There is no writing on it other than electricity and laser warning triangles. The roadworks labelled as 'Ethernet cable' ran down the pavement toward the roundabout then a dozen yards along Pavillon's way.

Ah. Finally managed to find the planning application. Turns out it's for 68 houses so that would justify a dedicated network. Access is via the roundabout but it seems odd that the cabinet is on the opposite side of the road. Maybe they couldn't put it close to the BT kit.

I hope they tell prospective buyers that that was originally designated as a flood plain and protected by a pumping station. Basically that takes the run-off from our estate and channels it along to the balancing pond to the east. That station failed once and a tanker had to be parked outside for several days. Oh well - the benefits of climate change perhaps :-/
